    Nearly became the first recorded victim of the new Edinburgh trams tonight.

    I was heading along the Broomhouse Path towards Edinburgh Park Station, struggling against a fair headwind. I reached the new tram track crossing point just before the Station and hadn't thought to bother about checking for oncoming traffic. I glanced round and noticed a very bright light heading straight for me and it took a couple of seconds to register that this was an actual, in the flesh, tram. I made it acrtoss Ok, but as it passed the assorted drivers, workies and safety testers were all staring hard at me (one of them probably scribbling a note about 'bikes ... hadn't thought about that!'

    Ah well, another hazard to look out for from now on ...

    You must have been a few miles further up, I raced the tram from haymarket yards but it dropped me at roseburn. I was especially careful when it came to crossing to the Broomhouse path after hearing how quiet the bell is.

    Bells? They've got bells? I either lost that in the wind or they were trying to sneak up on me.

    ... but you said it 'would never happen'. ;-)

    For some reason I can't find the archive of that post!

    Of course running a tram in the middle of the night is one thing. I waited for ages behind this airport bus before getting onto Shandwick Place. Will buses be directed to stay off of tracks whenever possible? Where should a bike be here? Bike sign suggest right where I'm sitting.

    @LB - Finally a solution to the tracks!

    The council are to provide trikes to all cyclists...

    Completely eliminates the risk of falling off due to the new infrastructure.

    Much more reliable than signage and cheaper than the compensation payouts...

    All you need to do is become the official (sole?) supplier - do remember us when you make your fortune!

    No, the council would get it wrong as usual:

    They'd provide us all with stabilisers but make such a mess of the contact negotiations that they'd spend 3 times as much on them as if they had supplied us with trikes!

    Laidback: You should be exactly where you are. Until beyond Haymarket the tram has to take it's turn through shared junctions like any other motor vehicle.

    Yes... that's what I thought. So in future the tram may just be in a jam with assorted vehicles - mainly buses with the occasional cycle.

    I was tempted to use the direct route on West Maitland to Haymarket but it's not marked for cycles.

    Not so much 'Tram latest' as 'Tram last'; I've been enjoying the historical film of Edinburgh Corporation building and then killing off its cable and electric trams, andcomplete with mellifluous RP narration.

    Look out for the rail bridges over Trinity junction (0h40, 0h55 and 1h26) and Seafield Road (1h00), views of Polwarth (0h42 and 0h46), and the delights of Gilmore Place junction (0h48). Marvel at the compact layout of Leith Street (1h13) and ye olde Picardy Place (1h15). Watch as a cyclist expertly negotiates the tracks at Greenside (1h10) and over the Trinity S-bend (1h26).

    There's also a tram sporting an advert for Golden Rule ale but I'm not going to tell you whereabouts it is in the film.

    The journo clearly doesn't know what "mothballing" a building means. "Demolished" is the word they're looking for.

    Also, Unite bought the site for £6m in 2006 (height of property speculation boom) and it's now worth £40m in the middle of a very long housing building and finiancial slump? Seems to me the best performing bit of investment anyone has ever made in Edinburgh!

    Most of the 'added value' was due to the council awarding planning permission.

    It remains to be seen how much the city will get in future Council Tax.

    IF it's worth £40m, that's £250k before building begins. So, "affordable"?

    If only LB/CEC had held onto the land and planned to build the houses...

    I see new led (Light Emitting Diodes, Anth!) signs are being installed at the St Andrew Sq tram stop. Its not clear in the photo but the signs currently state, Next Tram due in: 4 months, 18 days, 17 hours, 25 mins 32 seconds.

    This is the 3rd change I believe. The promo tram had the "Harlequin" livery, then there was one with a single red stripe on a white body and now it is a madder stripe on a white body. Plus ca change.

    My dad at the weekend mentioned remembering falling off his bike on tramlines in Newcastle as a kid. Made me think of all of those people commening on EEN news stories of "We had trams in the past and no-one fell on them".
