Is the standards document for the tram tracks available online?

It would appear the lights at North St Andrew's Street have been changed to wait for tr*ms coming as I had to wait a stupidly long time at them this morning until the stupid tr*m came along and pulled up and waited and then drove away again. Never mind that there may be cyclists waiting eh? It is only a blooming national cycle route. Who would have thought that they would still be a massive pain in the backside even after the works had finished. Me, that's who.

Think they were claiming that such timings were part of the 'testing' period.

    Certainly seems odd/unnecessary.

It certainly does. It is not as if it can turn in front of me unexpectedly, or even I it at that particular point.

The wait for the traffic lights to stop the traffic running along York Place seems to have increased dramatically in the past couple of weeks, even when there is no sign of trams.

Is there a bye law which prohibits cyclists from cycling up York Place and then cycling over the tracks at N St Andrew St/York Pl junction, to turn down Dublin Street? My usual route home from Bus station is up York Pl, hop over tram tracks and then cross when safe at the top of Dublin St. Its getting a little more risky with trams.

From March 17 the depot control room will switch on to a 24 hours, seven days a week operation, with the number of trams on the streets set to grow in the run-up to the launch day.

I went into the chicane at Haymarket today, you have to wait there a long time but there were trams in both directions. I watched a cyclist go round on the road instead. There was also a taxi perpendicular to the tax. The cyclist was just through the tram when the eastbound tram came up onto the road where it had to wait for the taxi to move closer to station (still perp to direction of travel). Fun and games.

Tone of the article is interesting. Last year I'd expect a head line along the lines of "White elephant tram predictably jammed by Edinburgh road user."

  12. I thought this part about the public's attitude was interesting too, steveo:

Mr Rhodes has also told how the biggest surprise resulting from the incident was the outpouring of anger and frustration towards the driver for holding up the tram.

He added: “Folk were shouting for the police and for a tow truck. A number of guys were talking about trying to lift the car out of the way, everyone was fuming that the guy had been so insensitive.

“It was odd to see everyone on the side of the trams and the wardens – a wee cheer even went up when the guy finally moved the car.”

(Wish the general public would take against illegal / irresponsible parking in this fashion wherever it happens, and whoever's being inconvenienced though).

Tramline crashes are now less frequent than in 2013, with greater awareness by regular cyclists and with removal of the Haymarket taxi rank which forced cyclists into the tramlines. Nonetheless they continue at a depressing rate and we have had the first case where the victim was hit by a passing car, which ran over her foot. The worst locations for crashes appear to be...

Edinburgh tram drivers catch first glimpses of 'unusua'l bikes.

We are now more unusual than a tram (numerically)!

Customer requested detour through Haymarket on her tour - off peak time though so quite safe. Tram overtook me without swerving.

If I could work out how to post images, I'd include a pic I took of Exercise Salvador. I was one who took part and I'd say it was a fairly successful PR job from Edinburgh Trams. Everyone enjoyed the smooth ride and the views. More like a light railway than a bus. I thought its route of airport - park and ride - business parks - giant shopping centre - stadium - railway station. Very much how a modern city works.

Also enjoyed the sight of the cycle paths, from Balgreen on.

I live 50 yards from the Murrayfield Stadium stop so will be catching it to go to Princes Street and it's the obvious route to the airport.

Couldn't decide on this thread or the Leith Walk one.

"MOVES to pave the way for extending the tram route to Leith are set to be approved by council chiefs even before the first services start running between the city centre and the airport.

City leaders are to take the first steps towards running trams to the port and beyond by ensuring improvements for Leith Walk are “future-proofed” for an expansion of the £776 million project."

"Now councillors plan to spend an extra £1 million for additional works as part of the Leith Programme – £9.1 million worth of road, footway and cycle improvements – to take account of the possibility of the tram line being extended in future. "

"“The design team have take opportunities to ‘future proof’ the enhanced design for a tram extension, including changes to kerb position. The roundabout at the junction with London Road has been removed in the enhanced design, to be replaced with a T junction that is compatible with a tram extension.”"

And we thought it was to make it more cycle friendly...

Tram at (full?) speed this morning westbound alongside Broomhouse civil service.

Pretty impressive at speed, very quiet.

Must try and remember just how quiet when crossing at Edinburgh Park though !

MOVES to extend the tram route to Leith have received a mixed reaction in the port and across the Capital.

Businesses which have already suffered the nightmare of tram works in Leith Walk warned any new construction programme must be handled differently – and some said they did not want the trams at all.

Finally saw a tram in motion other than near the depot today. I was going down the Russell Road zig-zag as one headed west over the road.

Train problems yesterday afternoon due to "safety checks at Edinburgh Park" which I guessed were tram-related... (I could be wrong, of course).

@fimm I'm not entirely sure how the tram could have any impact on the rail network. Network Rail are extremely careful about asset protection, so wouldn't allow an external party like the tram anywhere near their infrastructure.

@PS but the tram goes over the railway line at Edinburgh Park. I was guessing that it was Network Rail people doing the checking, but the reason was tram-related. I have no basis for this speculation whatsoever!

Quickly email it to the EEN for some "RAIL SAFETY HORROR TRAM BRIDGE COLLAPSE FEARS" headline-froth amusements.

My train back from Glasgow yesteday was cancelled due to a "circuit failure at Edinburgh Park" according to ScotRail. That's not a particulary helpful explanation of the general punter (if indeed it was accurate), and I don't know exactly what it means or if the tram could have caused it. I'd guess not, though.
