Track circuit I assume. Each section of track is electrically insulated from the next. The metal wheels and axle of the train complete a circuit across the rails and that's how the signallers know exactly where each train is.

If the circuit fails for whatever reason, they don't know where trains are and can't signal accordingly.

But yes, that's not an immediately obvious explanation to the train passenger who has never whiled away a few hours reading up on the technicalities of railway signaling.

Sounds more reasonable than blaming it on the trams, though.

I guess they can't win on explanations for delay/lateness. Give a reason and it is easy to use technical terms that the general public don't understand. Don't give a reason and people complain about that too!

(My personal favourite was the person who announced "This train is running late due to its late departure from Reading station." Well, yes. We know what he meant, it just didn't come out quite right...)

Traverse Theatre Company in association with Utter is delighted to announce a new addition to the Spring programme with a brand new piece of verbatim theatre, Bloody Trams: A Rapid Response.

A verbatim piece created by the People of Edinburgh, the show will form a rapid response to one of Edinburgh's most contested and emotive debates over the last decade - the Edinburgh Trams.

    From first link -

    "

but I still think it would be extremely beneficial for both residents and visitors to have a fast tram route to Newhaven.

    "

But "fast" only works 'off-road' - which Leith Walk isn't.

The other reasons trams are faster is because a) they only stop about 1/4 as often, b) they control the traffic lights.

Both could be fixed for buses at (relatively) no cost.

So far miller homes have agreed to take half the 400,000 back - leaving money to pay for apprenticeships which is good. The council are making the details published so dependent on huge number of firms who donated it could be a million or a bit more at the end of the day. This I'd because the Granton bit isn't getting built? Now I love trams but I love the NEPN more so I am glad.

"because the Granton bit isn't getting built?"

That is the reason for Miller getting money back.

As for others it will depend whether any actually parted with cash - there were resisters!

Presume there will be some who paid because of developments between York Place and Ocean Terminal.

ST Andrew Square is to be transformed into a major Fringe venue for the first time to coincide with the arrival of trams.

Report by CEC on Cycle 'incidents' related to tram tracks.

Sorry, not sure if this has already been published on the forum.

"not sure if this has already been published on the forum"

    Don't think so.

Latest entry "Cyclist nearly fell from bicyle"

Bet there are a lot of those never notified to the council!

Haymarket seems to get mentioned a lot...

I'm sure there are many "nearly fell" moments not reported!

My one 'negative interaction' with a tramline (as opposed to negative interaction with the whole line and the way it's affected cycling around it in general) would be one of those. Rear wheel was sliding away from me but I stayed upright, purely down to bike handling ability (I certainly don't fit into the EEN commenters' category too "too stupid, yadda, yadda, yadda...")

I suppose there's an element of "should I/we report every incident?" On the one hand, yes as it's the only way to get the full picture, but on the other hand do we report every time a wheel slides on a ped crossing stud, or a white line, or when a sunken drain grating makes you bump out of the saddle? Imagine the amount of paperwork for the authorities if we did! But would it actually dilute their response if we were seen as whinging?

Feel free to treat all the above as as rhetorical, just thoughts wandering around my head!

HOPES of extending the tram line to Leith have been delivered a major snub after Transport Minister Keith Brown ruled out any possibility of the city council getting Scottish Government cash for the plan.

I saw a tram parked over a tram-junction last night beside Haymarket Yards, though it had.its hazards on, so it's OK.

@wingpig do you have a beard? Did you stop & get your camera out?
If that was you, I was the woman wobbling along on a Brompton.

I did peer at your rack to see if it was missing a roller but couldn't tell. Good evening to you.

I do have a beard and did get my camera out. Only when I had put the latter away did I think to check to see if anyone uses that wee corner strip of scrub as a dog-toilet. Very close.

    Good evening to you too.
I did wonder if you were a CCEer, don't ask me why... maybe it was the stopping to take a photo, or maybe I subconciously registered that you were looking at me!

I was being even more cautious than usual because I'd fixed a puncture at lunchtime and hadn't got the front tyre all that hard, which seems to affect the handling quite badly with the pannier putting the weight over the front wheel.

If you could tell that you were being peered at due to Brompton + Haymarket when I went past just after crossing the tracks it would suggest CCE.

[sarcasm] By council standards, considering their record of funding and financing the trams, this is prudent - I'd have expected them to take out a pay day loan from one of the companies advertising on daytime TV! [/sarcasm]

Lucky man, took the track at high speed and shallow angle. Tram driver also stopped in time to not mangle him or his bike.

The first fatality on the railways was on the inaugural passenger journey of the Rocket Liverpool to Manchester - William Huskisson

    Take care

TRAMS are expected to prove “a real boon” for homeowners, with property prices set to rise by as much as 15 per cent along the route.
