That's about as close to the target of "late May" as you can get....

Lesley Hinds, the transport convenor at City of Edinburgh Council, said: "When I took over two years ago the tram project, and promised what I would try to do and strive to do was to have this tram project on the revised budget and on the revised timetable....
"All I can say is that I over the last two years have taken this project by the scruff of the neck."
"
I look forward to her taking firm control of walking and cycling projects.
There is a real need for direction at CEC if there is to be any chance of '15% by 2020'.
She does listen -

Ahhh... Lesley Hinds... Never knowingly avoided a positive-spin news opportunity.
Never knowingly spotted within a mile of a negative no-chance-of-positive spin news story (witness the Mr. Gilzean situation).
You know I wouldn't be a bit surprised to find out she was a politician.

"Pensioners with concessionary cards will be able to travel free on the trams,"
My parents were wondering about this so I had a poke around the TfE website the other day to see if this was explicitly stated anywhere, but at the time it did not appear to be.

I assume this means local concessionary cards? My Englandshire-dwelling parents will have to hand over their hard-earned pension for the priviledge?

Who's up for racing* the tram then on the day of launch?
*all road laws observed. No recklessness involved.
5am, at the Gyle. See who gets to York Place first.
(Is it do-able? Has anyone seen the timetable?)
Posted 10 years ago # -
Their full length video takes 22:52 from the airport to York place. Although the video cuts at the Gyle stop I'm not sure how reliable the timing is.

I think even the mighty Hoy would struggle, even with his current (motorised) machine. Though possibly less so at 5am.

A quick check on cyclestreets suggests the 'fast' route from the Gyle to York Place to take 33mins via Meadowhouse Road, Corstorphine Road, Melville Street and Queen Street - so you wouldn't see the tram again until York Place itself. I imagine it could be done quicker than that.

I think some of the timings on the video are accelerated and it's also a test run where the tram doesn't actually stop at all stops but just slows down. So not 22 mins from the airport, sadly.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that the timetable was for 35 mins from the airport.
EDIT 35 mins is what it anticipates on the tram website (pre-testing)

Yeah, for 22 minutes the tram would need a better route. Coincidentally that was the time the airport bus used to advertise to from the airport to Waverley.
You might catch a glimpse of your tram at Haymarket. I wonder if the timetable will start with them all feeding out of the depot or if they'll have some located on the route already.

"You might catch a glimpse of your tram at Haymarket."
I think the 'idea' is to follow the tram route as closely as possible.
RBS or EP/station to Haymarket might be best 'fun'.
Haymarket to YPl ought to be OK time wise, but extra risky(?)

I think @AKen's route has the most going for it. It would be a bit like one of those Top Gear challenges that I'm sure nobody on here watches ever. We'd see AKen going hell for leather along Queen's Street, legs burning, lungs bursting, and have no idea until they get to the Portrait Gallery whether they had won or not. Then they would get to the Gallery and see a tram with James May (or chdot or whoever) in it sitting at York Place...
...or maybe York Place would be empty and they could turn to camera and say something celebratory.

Perhaps not at five o'clock in the morning......

I am keen to be on the tram with a folding bicycle, why not flash job critical mass inside the tram?
Posted 10 years ago # -
Surprised the headline was not
There could be. Disaster of some kind
As those words are within a quote
even EEN loves the trams now

A tram was blocked heading through Haymarket this evening.
There was a coach partially in the drop-off area with its tail over the tracks. Two taxis ahead of it weren't making much attempt to help it manoeuvre forwards to let the tram through.
I filtered carefully past them all.
Chalk that up as a win for the bicycle.

(I'll put this under tram latest as I'm sure it has something to do with them)
Anyone notice the traffic light phasing at the wide pedestrian lights in Shandwick Place by Boots?
Cycled up to them today & they were on red for as long as I had them in view. I stopped, waited a bit, as did the people at the side of the road (red man), waited a bit more, then a bit more. Thought 'how long does this allow for people to cross the road?' At which point the green man came on. I pushed the bike along the pavement past the crossing. Very odd. There were no trams around, but I could not for the life of me understand why the lights should have been at red for so long without allowing pedestrians to cross either.Posted 10 years ago # -
They're the biggest ninjas I've ever met.
If it's blowing a decent breeze as I cross at the Balgreen/Broomhouse junction the sound of the wind through my flowing locks does a reasonable job of masking their catlike approach; I imagine they're effectively silent in the bustle of town.
Posted 10 years ago # -
I've not met one in mega-busy fast-moving traffic yet, but their mournful donging is audible above York-Place-during-rush-hour and Haymarket-when-jammed-solid.
Had anyone yet discovered whether they're fitted with actual dingable mechanical bells or just some cashpoint-style convincing sound files and a speaker?Posted 10 years ago # -
Most trams carry a light orchestral ensemble to do the warnings - what you're hearing is the percussionist but it's worth waiting for a full crescendo from the strings section (only under certain traffic conditions).

"A new route N11 will be introduced between the City Centre and the existing weekend service on the N30 will be enhanced to run seven nights a week."
Hmm, they really should have copied and pasted the press release rather than trying to add the route and realising they didn't have a clue what they were doing.

Council builds tram between airport and town.
Council merges tram and bus operations.
Merged operator increases frequency and operating hours of bus service between airport and town. The net effect of the tram has been to increase the number of busses running into central Edinburgh?!
What am I missing?
Posted 10 years ago # -
"What am I missing?"
EARL? It's what we needed rather than the tram.
