"...in its bag..."
Next: in a bag, sufficient to provide protection against bike-upholstery oil-transfer but translucent enough to not even slightly disguise the contents?
CityCyclingEdinburgh was launched on the 27th of October 2009 as "an experiment".
IT’S TRUE!
CCE is 15years old!
Well done to ALL posters
It soon became useful and entertaining. There are regular posters, people who add useful info occasionally and plenty more who drop by to watch. That's fine. If you want to add news/comments it's easy to register and become a member.
RULES No personal insults. No swearing.

The following items may NOT be taken onto the Company’s buses:
a) any weapon or explosive or any article which is dangerous, offensive or excessively cumbersome
b) bicycles other than folding bicycles which are folded and fully enclosed in a suitable carrying bag

I presume that covers the tram until the 'bike trial' in 6 months.
I believe people have taken unwrapped Bromptons on LB buses.
BUT in addition drivers have 'discretion' AND they are the only staff person on board...
So it's probably down to "suitable".
On LRT buses, never had an issue with the Brompton in its bag (or more technically under its cover!). This includes the fact that the cover is unzipped slightly to carry by the saddle. The driver on the number 11 on more than 1 occasion was patient enough to let me do this or fold number 2 son's scooter and put it in its protective bag when the bus arrived at the stop a bit quicker than I was expecting (or more likely we were a little late!).
But going back to the trams. Are we saying that a racing bike wouldn't be allowed, however if you had it in a hard protective box (having taken it off your flight from the airport?!) would? As indeed huge luggage trunks (quarter the size of a London police box as I witnessed once at an airport) would be allowed as well? It must all be down to the likeliehood of impalement / getting oil on people?
Never mind bikes, surely the question everyone wants to know the answer to is "can you get a washing machine home on it?"
BTW I have been refused to take my Brompton on an LB bus due to not having the bag with me. It was early on a Sunday and the driver was obviously grumpy. I just raced the bus to the train station.
Needless to say I won.
kaputnik - as long as the revenue protection officer is agreeable and it doesn't cause an obstruction, then the tram conditions of carriage allow for washing machines to be transported on a tram, see Section 8:
http://edinburghtrams.com/information/conditions-of-carriage
Folding bikes, enclosed in a "suitable carrying bag" are allowed - as long as there is luggage space. Full sized bikes are not allowed, although the conditions of carriage make it clear that this might change in future.

Edinburgh trams: 40,000 tickets sold in first weekend

Not bad for first weekend.
Was ear wiggins (sir Bradley ear wiggins, predictive spelling) at top of broughton st older couple had walked twenty minutes or fifteen dependent on whether wife or husband was estimating to catch a tram I am guessing from corstorphine. I found this hopeful, if people will change their behaviour and not expect a door to door experience as the norm, but you know I love trams.
I tried to race the tram on my way east tonight from the rail bridge to the Balgreen stop. I came second but arrived just in time to see someone wheel their full size bike onto the tram. The doors closed and the tram moved off immediately after so I assume they got at least to the next stop.
Noise polution! No squeaking brakes and wheels but tannoys.

Trambo.

Mr Varadkar said: “Breaking a red light is one of the most dangerous things any motorist can do, and driving through a red light at a Luas junction is both irresponsible and stupid. There have been 13 incidents between motorists and trams this year, and one loss of life.
"
Boo, in all but one it stops before we get to see the damage interaction with a tram will do to the stupid.
Two wee snippets of tram news:
Girl hit by Edinburgh tram on Princes Street in first week of service
(Apparently uninjured)
and
Edinburgh Trams @EdinburghTrams
27,000 of you took got on our trams yesterday. Thanks to everyone who has got involved. #tramsarego
Decided to take public transport this morning as I didn't fancy a repeat of yesterday's downpour drenching. I was surprised by how busy the tram I took was, even at the tail end of the rush-hour. Can't be many people just out for a joy-ride on a wet weekday morning.
Crucial thing is how many are 'new' (and therefore paying) rather than just transferring from buses.
Seems there might actually be a greater shift from cars than the tram people expected - which would be good. Greater scope for reallocating road space...
Greater scope for reallocating road space...
...[whisper it] away from buses as well if punters are actually transferring from bus to tram.
Tram raced to Gyle by rickshaw, beaten.
Went over the tram line in the wet for the first time today after turning right at Waverley Bridge onto Princes Street (unusual route for me as I'd been at the Fringe Programme launch). Couldnt have hit it more straight and yet rear wheel lost traction and skidded to the right; pest of a taxi driver too close behind so glad I didnt come off. They were fine in the dry the only other times I have gone over them.

Ideal. So, replace taxis with rickshaws - solve pollution issues and taxi driver high blood pressure concerns in one fell swoop.
On Saturday night I 'Strava'd'my tram ride from Haymarket to Edinburgh Park and back.
Heading west I was 'PR's' and KOM's aplenty.
Eastwards, not a sausage, not even in the top 3 PT's on any segment.
The tram was doing a fair lick both ways.
My analysis is that into the wind, the tram will kick my butt, with the wind, even a wee fatty on a single speed is faster than a tram :-)
There are stretches of that where the tram does 70kph, but 25kph at others and obviously it has fairly long stops.

All the more reason we should be allowed to take our bikes on board.

I wish I knew what that meant.
