No but in each case there is a good bus service closer to the bulk of the housing stock than the tram stop.

Think about it, Murrayfield, there are about a dozen houses closer to the tram than the 26. Haymarket is 50/50 and unless you want to go to the airport the gyle the bus is probably better. Balgreen is split nicely between the 22 on Saughton Road or the 26 on St. Johns Road.

Whilst North East Broomhouse the tram stop is only 5 metres from the nearest bus stop. Actually North West Broomhouse is better served by the 22...

I've got a railway station near my house, with a lot of bus stops nearer - but sometimes I use the train going into town. There's certainly more than one residential area served by the tram - regardless of whether there's also bus stops in the vicinity.

Why? Is it quicker? Cheaper? or just because you prefer it?

But none better served by the tram, best one can hope for is equally well served. In most cases its further to walk, and a less regular service. So apart from personal preference, why bother?

Had a fantastic tram ride to the gyle from princes street today. Took 18 minutes.

Smooth, luxurious and same price as bus. No doubt my preference.

Helped a senior citizen from Midlothian acquire her ticket, her pal from Edinburgh was free. They had decided to take the team to the gyle for lunch and would take it back too as it was quicker than the bus. They said it wasn't often that they had a handsome gentleman helping them.

On my return I had a very pleasant chat with a man wearing a better together campaign broach.

Busy both ways and tons of smiling travellers. far more cheerful than the 44.

@gembo, perhaps it was some of these people you met?:

    http://www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/news/transport/trams-makes-edinburgh-airport-hotspot-for-oaps-1-3441574

They all seem to be claiming that the airport is a good place to go for a cheap bite to eat. Is there some kind of cheap-eats wing at the airport that I have missed every time I go there?

Do Edinburgh Trams benefit financially from OAP journeys?
Wetherspoons will be pleased, they must have had to increase their scone order.

Robert Schwandl - the man behind the excellent Urbanrail.net - visited Edinburgh on the tram line's opening weekend to try it out and wrote a blog post on what he found. I'd say it's pretty damning.

Was helping to run the cinema in Balerno last night Big River Man about Martin Strel the Slovenian ultra marathon swimmer swimming the amazon. Very odd movie. Anyway one of our loyal customers was a bit late as had been on a pub crawl via tram using day ticket.

He had a Tramstopping poster based on Trainspotting film poster. Roseburn bar lookd the best bet. Curiously this team also went to the airport to eat???

People are apparently up to stuff on their own and we do not know about it

Mock tram to be sawn in half and placed on Calton Hill next to the unfinished National Monument as a visible symbol of the perils of bad project management. Edinburgh's Shame alongside Scotland's Shame.

Witnessed yesterday around lunchtime a graffiti artist/vandal tagging the tram bridge across the railway between Balgreen & Broomhouse.

She was working in broad daylight(!) on the path and seemed to be painting a car radiator grill onto the path side of the bridge fence/parapet (which is solid grey steel). She was copying a design from a book which she had open at the page as I passed.

She was stocky/large build, in her late 30s/40s with dark shoulder length hair. She had a blue/white striped reuseable bag containing the spraypaints and a black mountain bike/BSO with speckles of white paint on it.

The bike, of course, was the perfect getaway vehicle. No polis on foot or in a car would've been able to catch her, as she would've just cycled off down the path. A polis on bike, however, would have easily caught her, although I suspect that catching these people doesn't actually stop them.

What probably does stop them is the fact that (amazingly) the Trams people had cleaned off the 'work' the same day - as I went past today to take a picture, but it had gone!

Oh and her tag was 'WOMAN', sprayed through a stencil.

Witnessed this evening: someone gigglingly driving her Porsche right through the Haymarket tram stop after using it as a drop-off point for a pal. No trams at the time, luckily...

Why didn't RHS run a shuttle bus every 10mins between Ingliston P&R tram stop and the show?

Looks to me like RHS have 'got it in for' the Tram

And of course no mention of cycling to the show. Heaven forbid you might pitch up with your family on bikes!

An RHS spokeswoman said some people would use the tram to get to the show, but the walk from the park-and-ride was about 15 minutes and included narrow footpaths along busy roads.

“It’s probably not the safest route for people.

Yes. Exactly, like cyclists have been saying for years. If the RHS was that bothered they have had plenty of years to lobby the council for wider and better paths, rather than just ignore the issue.

If the path/ farm track between Eastfield Road and Ingliston Road was opened up / surfaced, the distance to the tram stop from the show entrance would be just under 800m. walkable by most (given they're going to spend a day walking round a large site anyway) and shuttles could be put on for the older/less mobile.

Far safer to pay them to park in a muddy field then. Although this year it looks like the mud might be optional.

Apparently walking from the airport is quite acceptable:

"Over 150 flights connect Edinburgh to the rest of the UK and Europe each day and with the Showground just a ten-minute walk from the airport"

Yeah, it's all about parking and bus drop-off revenue. Oh dear, folk may have to walk for 15 minutes in lovely sunshine! What a tragedy.

Car parking at RHS: £8 (plus wee bit o fuel)
    Bus 98: £6
    Tram and walk: £3
    Cycle: free

Hmm, wonder which I would choose?

    You must be mistaken:

"Edinburgh Tory transport spokeswoman Joanna Mowat said it was “really disappointing” the major tourist attraction was “so discouraging about the tram when it has every other form of travel planning on its website”"

    ;-)

(I suppose their get-out clause is that they do provide a link to Traveline)

why is that developers 'may' bankroll a tram extension, when it is taken for granted that they will bankroll an extra 1300 parking spaces?

"bankroll an extra 1300 parking spaces?"

They will get the revenue from them but not from the tram.

BUT this seems to about CEC getting the developer to lend them money because they can get it at a lower rate than the council!

It is also assumes that extending the line will result in an operating surplus - unlike the existing service!

I took my full size hybrid on the tram on Wednesday morning after the bike breakie.
It was bagged and fiited neatly into luggage racks.
    No problems at all.

"full size hybrid ... It was bagged"

You have a big bag for taking it in the tram?

@chdot it is a Dahon cadenza 8 folding bike. (Sorry not worked out how to do pictures on forum).
It folds in half very easily. No need to take wheels off to fit in standard bike bag.
I have the bike bag for carrying kids bikes on top of luggage in the car.
Just thought I would see how practical it is to take a bike on the tram.
Bike bag is quite big when rolled up, about size of two loafs of bread.
I can now see the value of a Brompton for multi-modal trips.

    Edit.
Just found some images on google
