THE inquiry into Edinburgh’s trams fiasco is in danger of taking longer than the project
itself, an MSP claimed today.

Marco Biagi, SNP MSP for Edinburgh Central, said that three months after inquiry chairman Lord Andrew Hardie asked for the help of the public, there was still no opportunity for people to submit evidence.

Can't say I'm surprised. Trams always look busy when I'm on Bankhead Drive (I think) regardless of time of day so they must be doing something right.

Now we just need them to go down to Leith. But for less than a billion quid.

Are we allowed to take bikes on yet? I thought there was a 6 month wait then we would get a trial.

Or did I just make that up?

@nelly: I think it was confirmed at the Spokes meeting last week that a trial would be starting "shortly".

Perhaps a trial like Operation Pretend One-Dimension Gig, where they recruit every Brompton user in the city to test the capacity at Haymarket?

    Cheers, helpful all.

WP, you have me thinking just how many bromptons or other folders are there in edinburgh?

I see a fair few around, but that might just mean dozens oveerall?

Maybe your experiment could shine a light on this vital piece of data !

An aquaintance has been taking his Brompton on the tram without issue (well he said he had one conductor have a problem with it once).

I hope the trial is for 'regular' bikes as well as folding. After all what's a folded bike, other than a bit of hand luggage.

You can take folding bikes on already as per Lothain bus policy. Should be in a bag, can be an IKEA bag. If not in a bag might get gip. But unlikely.

The trial should therefore be for non folding bikes, presumably at non peak times?

Meanwhile, cyclists will be able to bring their bikes on board Edinburgh trams during the month as part of a trial, it has been announced.

Both folded and unfolded pedal bikes will be allowed on during off peak hours as part of the trial, which has been supported by the city council and cycling groups.

Edinburgh Trams will take feedback from cyclists and other passengers during the trial.

When will the inquiry into the inquiry start?

I caught the tram on Friday but didn't know that it's impossible to buy a single fare using a credit card. I wonder how many other people have been similarly conned into buying extra tickets thereby inflating the trams usage figures.

@ACSimpson it's started. It's just not taking evidence from witnesses yet.

I'm also similarly miffed that the M-tickets app system makes you buy separate (and non-transferable) tickets for the bus and the tram, despite them both costing £1.50.

@kaputnik, My comment was more tongue in cheek regarding the pseudo journalists finding it surprising that an inquiry costs money and so will probably want the government to run a second inquiry into it.

@Acsimpson sorry, brain was on autopilot and didn't register the second "inquiry" in your post.

THE inquiry into Edinburgh’s delayed and over-budget tram line is investigating the role played by Scottish Government agency Transport Scotland, it was confirmed yesterday.

Lord Hardie, the former Lord Advocate chairing the inquiry, highlighted the role of the transport body in a list of 65 “areas of interest” as the probe launched a public call for evidence.

Members of the public can now submit their own evidence via the inquiry website.

and £13,950 for Leith Walk improvements.

Would be interested to know how exactly the "fixer" "fixed" Leith Walk!

    Posted 8 years ago #
  25. @kaputnik It's bad enough as it is after the work; I'd hate to see what it was like before he 'fixed' it!

(Which reminds me - must complain to the Council about the light-controlled crossing outside the Mermaid and the new bus stop at the foot of the Walk. Both turn into swimming pools after a bit of rain (no drainage put in), meaning bus users and pedestrians waiting to cross will get soaked by passing vehicles, or need waders to avoid wet feet.

It's pretty obvious that they don't send anyone to inspect completed sections for snagging issues. Quality workmanship as ever. And let's not mention the new road surface already cracking up around drain covers...)

This appears to happen alot these days. Our access road to our street was relaid with fine smooth tarmac a few weeks ago but the surface is pan flat and level, which means water does not drain off to the edges as it did before the resurfacing. Do they not use engineers anymore?

The engineers design the roads and project manage, but time-served contractors build them. We know from the tram depot step height debacle that clerks of works are in short supply nowadays.

Perhaps we should be seeing more use of porous tarmac. That's why motorways tend not to flood.

There are some sections like this on some of the single track roads over the Lammermuirs, near Crystal Rig windfarm (presumably repairs to road damaged by the heavy vehicles associated with the windfarm). It's as though they've used a spirit level. They'll be horribly slippy come the first frost.

Roman road engineers will be spinning in their urns.
