If I could not cycle @chdot I would skateboard down to Edinburgh park and do that, well if I could skateboard. Probably better with a scooter.

Reminds me, really for a separate thread but slightly relevant, so I might not get deleted in the new regime but I met big John last night on the towpath, chat went as follows

    Gembo: Lo John
John: Hi, what are you up to?
Gembo: psyching myself up for cycling up a big hill (ravel rig)
John: Try walking and see how the other half live.
Gembo: No, it would wear out my shoes
    John: Ha, ha,ha,ha

    I like the comment:
"While I appreciate Alex's concern, he'd be better off concentrating on getting Norwich ready for the Premiership next season."

A police spokeswoman said: “[We] can confirm that a 32-year-old man has been involved in a collision with a tram.

    From the EEN article:
"Tram expert Professor Lewis Lesley, technical director of Lancashire-based light rail company Trampower, said the incident was “highly unusual”.
He said: “It’s such an unusual event that it becomes headline news. How many people have been hit by cars today?
“Trams are the safest form of public transport. I don’t think there’s been a single fatality in all the tramways across Britain in the last ten years.
“But 30,000 people have been killed by cars in the UK in that time – and around 40,000 are killed by cars in the US every year.”

I became the latest victim of the tram lines.

My wheel got stuck in one of the grooves and - boom! - down I went. (In Princes St, in front of the Ann Summers shop.)

Lots of bruising and swelling down my left side. Hopefully no breaks and I can be back on my bike in a couple of days.

Swelling always a problem outside Ann Summers. Get well soon @gibbo and mind how you go! ;-)

Rumour has it that CEC is seriously looking at Line 1B (Roseburn Path) again.

Don't know if as well as or instead of Leith Walk.

That will destroy cycling in Edinburgh...

When are they going to learn that they need to take space away from cars (& run the trams down roads) and not from bikes / pedestrians?

Does half a billion pounds spent ripping up the best cycle path in Edinburgh (possibly all scotland's urban areas) count as negative cycle spending?

Imagine what could be built with that money in order to keep cycle spending heading towards 10%.

Yup I've heard that as well. Council trying to "unlock" Granton development.

When the line was postponed it was "only" going to cost something like £60 million to finish it.

Wonder if they'll have to go through planning permission again?

I seem to remember the initial plans submitted to the Scottish Parly was for the Granton line to be single track most of the way. This would make more sense now that it's not going to be orbital, and would free up the land for a decent cycle and pedestrian route.

"Imagine what could be built with that money in order to keep cycle spending heading towards 10%."

If the line does go ahead, and the council builds a new cycle path alongside, presume that will come out of the cycling budget rather than the tram budget :-( That seems to be the way the tram funding works

With vegetation cleared and suitable retaining walls there's plenty of space for both bikes and trams to share the Roseburn Path. Lose a bit of the charm but to say it's not possible does nobody a service.

Have you seen the plans? The issue isn't the wide open bits where retaining walls could be used - it's under and over all the bridges.

Take for example the bridge at St Georges School. You have to fit 2 tram lines, a cycle path and a pedestrian path under the bridge - which was only just wide enough for 2 train lines.

The bridge over the water of Leith isn't wide enough so the plan is to bolt another bridge on to the side of it.

A source in the council says that yes it does have approval to be built but there is nothing in any budget plans anywhere to pay for this to be built on the roseburn path. Imagine it's postulating rather than actually possible.

Coltbridge Viaduct. There was a plan to do the same on one of the viaducts over the Esk for the Borders Railway that the cycle path used to run over, but it was conveniently and quietly dropped from the requirements.

Ah, I was wondering the other day what was happening about that. Should I be surprised?

Bolt on path for the Slateford aqueduct anyone?

    Yes and no.

It may or may not have been for 'railway workers only' - or 'impossible' because of nearby 'ancient monuments'

    Discussed here -

Whatever the 'truth' a serious lost opportunity.

The 'alternative' - paint on a pavement by Lugton - is pathetic.

The decision not to revive the firm - which has all-party support and is expected to be approved at a meeting next week - means that while the council will fund legal advice for former and current local authority employees and elected members who give statements to the inquiry, ex-Tie employees will have to pay for their own lawyers.

Edinburgh Trams lost almost £450,000 in 2014 - less than expected due to higher than predicted passenger numbers.

Three million people used the trams, following the launch of the service at the end of May 2014.

Bosses estimate it will take three years for the trams to make a profit.
Meanwhile, Lothian Buses said it carried 118 million passengers in 2014. The record figure allowed it to pay a dividend of £5.5m to its public sector owners.

Lothian Buses generated revenue of £135.3m last compared with £132.3m in 2013. It resulted in profit after tax of £8.24m (£8.58m in 2013).

The trams may at some point make an operating profit, but may never make a profit profit for a long time if ever, where buses companies can make a profit profit. Still now that you can take bikes on even if was a waste of money I quite like it.

I've seen enough TV baking to be able to make an edible tram cake. Poor show.

Can anyone find a company who will make a custom wedding cake, say, for 200 people which comes in at under £2 a head?

I'm not 100% on current market rates, but it doesn't seem particularly expensive. Travel expenses to attend the event and eat the cake will be an order of magnitude higher?

@Dave I think the point is that the £380 cake wasn't even a real cake. So no one could eat it anyway. They said there was an edible sponge for people to actually eat, but I didn't see the price for that - maybe it was included in the £380!

If it was a bus cake would the EEN care?

Mistakes were made - massive mistakes - but all this raking over the coals is a total waste of energy.
