As far as I can see, the real benefits from trams come with two key things:
    1) You develop a network that links up places people want to go between on a regular basis (on that basis, tramline 3 from Waverley, past the University, out to The Royal Infirmary and Newcraighall makes more sense than the current line; as would the Leith/City centre link of the Line 1 extension); and
    2) You use the tram as a catalyst to change how people use your city centre (cf, removal of cars from the centre of Bordeaux, Dijon, Strasbourg...)

    But "we" fear change...

Unfortunately due to the continuing congestion we need to shorten our service to Airport - West End only until further notice. #edintravel

TRAM - Short-running - Trams operating Airport - West End (Shandwick Place) only - http://yourb.us/1oxXuiz

At least 90% of the route length is running. Imagine if they had to suspend from Leith due to traffic congestion? Edinburgh - the only city that suspends trams due to traffic congestion... (!)

Service is back to normal now.

Trams will be prepared tomorrow I'm sure. Can't have such an expensive transport asset not working when there's congestion to be tackled. Computer modelling would have picked up this of course so hardly a surprise.

So do you think they'll cone off the tram lines on Shandwick next time...? :-)

In theory all buses should just drop passengers and the massive capacity of the trams can take people in rest of way. This would reduce vehicle movement - although all these buses would have to continue slowly onto Princes St.

We've got the bizarre situations where TfE vehicles are blocking TfE vehicles. The airport bus blocks the tram etc...

Cycling is faster but in two lanes of parked vehicles the air pollution is way over legal limit. Another reason to prioritise the tram surely?

A SPECIAL coating designed make Edinburgh’s tram lines less slippery is to be considered as the number of cyclists lodging injury claims over falls continues to rise.

Ms McAreavey reckons the system should be extended to the north and south as part of a fully integrated transport offering, though she admitted a full network could be a long way off.

“I think, in my view, for the economic success of the city we need a tram network,” she said. “I think what we’ve got now works, but I think for it to really make the impact it needs, we need to build a network.”

And the businesswoman insisted Transport for Edinburgh, the body that manages the city’s public transport operations, should eventually gain control over cycle lanes, taxis and roads.

Edinburgh Trams are to run every five minutes during the morning and evening rush hours to help cater for higher demand.

But will it lead to fewer cars and less junction clogging?

From Max and Ivan: "Day five, Ivan has his first bike accident! He tackled the tram line and lost." That wasn't part of the show but a comment on Facebook.

City chief executive Andrew Kerr said there was “no doubt” an expansion of the Capital’s tram system was an option for boosting Leith and the waterfront. But critics insisted the cash could be better spent elsewhere – and argued there was “no such thing as government money, only taxpayers’ money”.

The news comes as a document emerged confirming officials are looking to expand the trams down to Newhaven and Granton, west to Newbridge from Ingliston, and south to Little France, Newcraighall and Queen Margaret University.

The latest draft of the new Strategic Development Plan (SDP) – which sets out a vision for the longterm development of the Edinburgh region, and is drawn up by officials from Edinburgh and surrounding councils – lists the tram expansions as part of its “strategic projects 2018-2030”.

11 tram routes down Leith Walk in the early 1950s. We're still wringing our hands over 1.

ECT ridership was ~140 million in the 1930s (popn. 438,000). Lothian buses carries about ~114 million these days.

"Are tram tracks safe for cyclists?" ask the BBC

The piece ends with a patronising voice saying 'yes, if you approach them at the right angle'...

So that's Milligan and Anderson had their "I didn't do it" piece, and Cardownie very much had his "I totally didn't do it" piece. Jenny Dawe up next?

    Already done it -

Former councillor Jenny Dawe has cast doubt on claims the judge-led inquiry will have everything “in black and white” by revealing how key files will have been lost in the years following the collapse of tram delivery company Transport Initiatives Edinburgh (TIE) in 2007.

And the former leader of Edinburgh Lib Dems – who lost her seat at the City Chambers amid public fury about the stalled tramworks – said she would attend the hearing announced this week by First Minister Alex Salmond because she had “nothing to hide”.

There was also the rejection of congestion charging in a referendum in 2005. The money raised from the proposed charge would have been used for transport projects, including an extra tramline.

So the (political) party line is to blame TIE

Are we expected to forget TIE was effectively an agent of the Council, in addition to being a wholly owned Council company, which the Council should have been overseeing?

"Are we expected to forget TIE was effectively an agent of the Council"

    Indeed.

Part of the reason things didn't go too well from the start was because some of the initial staff were people who no longer had a place at CEC, so it wasn't just a start-up with the best/most experienced people hired in...

Of course lawyers have a lot to answer for too.

I'm disappointed that Susan Calman is happy to joke that she was one of them.

I hope she will be giving evidence. That might be entertaining...

    Yes

I was at a showing of twelfth night the movie with Imogen Stubbs and Richard e grant playing Olivia and Sir Andrew Aguecheek respectively at the film house many moons ago and enquired if they had perhaps shown the reels (reels are long strips of plasticky stuff that films used to be shown on, like tapes for music) in the following order 1-3-2-4.

They agreed but said they had been doing so all week and I was the first to point this out.
