(reels are long strips of plasticky stuff that films used to be shown on, like tapes for music)

    What's a tape?

Tapes that you can buy are making a comeback apparently? As are Super 8 can that be true? They had 8 tracks on them Curiously enough but never needed rewinding. I can sing eight abba songs. You played them in the car, they were size of VHS virtually. Similarly I can sing eight Carpenter's numbers. Every sha-la-la -la every whoa whoa whoawhoa.

All men and some women used to make mixed tapes of songs they liked, you always had about 52 seconds left at the end of a C90 (that is two sides of 45 minutes).

I used to go with Muddy Waters or Howlin Wolf for those bits (or sometimes William Burroughs off a Michael Franti LP)

Made one for the Fratelli Sarti restaurant in Bath Street and whenever they played it someone always asked about the last 52 seconds.

Always leave them asking for more?

Also if you were sweet on the person you were making the tape for you decorated the box it came in with pictures, drawings etc.

Indeed, although I am genuinely too young to have known what a Super 8 was until now - thanks!

The cassette industry has apparently been kept ticking over by American prisons - many of which don't allow CDs or even copied tapes (so no mix tapes either). Several million people in America, whose only available music medium is the humble tape, sent direct from the retailer.

    G means 8-track -

Super 8 is something else -

Ahh, I have heard of those - they have 8 audio channels, rather than 8 songs. The 8-track version of Animals by Pink FLoyd has an extra guitar solo at the end/beginning because of the loop.

    Like quadrophonic but double.

Fantastically dr John cooper Clark was extolling the virtues of mono or having two speakers next to each other in. Jukebox cabinet. He exemplified this by playing most of the ramones first album. It was fab. On radio six music this very afternoon

He said: “The managed crossing strategy has already looked at the potential for a light rail system – I hesitate to use the word tram – but something like that perhaps across the Forth Road Bridge.”

C30-C60-C-90 cassette single was blank on the other side encouraging home taping which EMI were not so keen on

    Tragic.

I'm sure TfE will look to see if any lessons need to be learned.

Five people have died and dozens more have been injured after a tram overturned in south London, police have said.

British Transport Police (BTP) has arrested the driver but would not confirm what for.

This is believed to be the first tram crash involving fatalities on board since 1959, when two female passengers and the driver died after a tram caught fire in Shettlestone Road, Glasgow, after a collision with a lorry.

How terrible. No indication as to what might have happened here.

I hope the media can keep some perspective here, but I'm not optimistic. Because it is an extremely rare sort of incident (unheard of nearly in our lifetimes) it will get blanket, hyperbolic coverage. The daily toll of life on the roads in and because of motor vehicles will go otherwise uncommented on as we're immune to that in all but the most tragic or extreme of cases.

First rail passenger fatality since 2007 too. Grim.

One would hope that Edinburgh has the automatic speed limiting system that Croydon perhaps just missed. Right?

The Croydon tram can crack 50mph, Edinburgh tram is slower and drivers all dawdle if Edinburgh tram derailleured be lucky to spill coffee

I'm taking a guess that the tram was driving through the long tunnel and failed to slow down, taking the 90 degree bend too fast.

The parallels in Edinburgh would be the decent down from St Andrew Square on to York Place. If a tram derailed there the tram could end up at the bottom of Dublin Street.

Trams are not fitted with any safety protection systems that apply the brakes automatically if they are going too fast, according to the Office of Rail and Road.

The tram has banned bicycles until January banned from 19/11/2016. I went on tram on Saturday no conductor but yesterday could not , last year 2015 bicycles were banned in august and for I think a week or 2 around the winter holiday this year 6 weeks for the winter holiday as well as August.

Saw that article & it's absurd they don't run the trams all night. They don't connect with a load of first thing/last thing flights.

Leaving aside the lunacy of the council competing with itself by the council owned bus service increasing their frequency to compete with the then just opened council owned tram service, why would the average visitor choose to take the tram from the city centre to the airport when the bus is cheaper and quicker (last time I looked).

@Ed1, are you sure? Still says this on trams web site:

"Cyclists can be take their bicycles on Edinburgh Trams seven days a week (except from week day peak travel hours 0730-0930 & 1600-1830). Bicycles will not be permitted during the Edinburgh Festival in August or during other pre-publicised special events. "

Airlink 100 bus only runs about an hour later/earlier than the tram. No heavy rail service either via Edinburgh Gateway (once open) after midnight or before 5am. Then your only public transport option to/from Edinburgh airport through the night is the night bus N22: not bad though, every 30 mins until 4am and quick journey time.

I was told by the conductor eastern European woman dark hair about 20 to 25, 5 foot 4 ish at 1510 ish last Sunday at York place as I tried to go to Edinburgh park, that bicycles would not be allowed during events for 6 weeks ish. I was a little surprised as had not heard this so did ask 3 times for clarification as would have though off peak the tram would still be ok it was busy on Sunday so could understand why would not get on that tram but as a rule surprised. I get the tram quite often on later Sunday night tram which is not that busy.
