@crowriver - have to say I've never thought of the N22 for those awful cheap early morning flights that I swear each time I will never catch again & then catch again as they are cheap!

Travellers could soon be arriving at Glasgow Airport on trams, if a new £144 million rail link project is given the green light....

Lothian Tory MSP Miles Briggs tabled a question asking when the inquiry would complete its work.
In a written answer, Mr Yousaf said: “Lord Hardie and his team are determined to conduct a thorough and wide-ranging investigation into the reasons behind the Edinburgh Tram Project delays and cost escalations and to deliver a report and recommendations to ensure lessons are learned for future major infrastructure projects.
“It will take as long as is necessary to get the answers the public wants in relation to the issues surrounding the Edinburgh Trams Project.”

Who ever designed the tram stops should be made to stand under one all winter explaining his design choices of airy modernist architecture and clean flowing lines mean that people who have to use them end up standing like emperor penguins to shelter from the weather.
And the moron who are signed it off should be right beside him.

Which one should be downwind?

An Edinburgh Trams spokesman said: “It’s disappointing the Conservatives have issued a figure that misrepresents both the success of the trams and how public transport in general operates. “We’ve already had to introduce extra services at peak times and there will be good news early in the new year on further service improvements.

Looking forward to Miles Briggs complaining about cars running on average at 20% capacity and the amount of money spent on them.
Posted 7 years ago # -
Well, average car occupancy in Scotland is 1.5 people per car per trip. Assuming that a car can carry five people that means cars have an average occupancy rate of 30%. Similar to that of the tram.
65% of Scottish car journeys are single occupancy - something I doubt happens on the tram.
I assume this scandalous waste of both public and private resources will be next on the Tories hit list...won't it?

EDIT: Dang! Beaten to it by Stickman.

""Passengers are complaining that they continue to be slower than the bus, and some residents are so furious with the inconvenience they caused they refuse to get on them."
In my experience the tram is invariably faster than the bus. But this is the post-truth world, so my anecdata is right and his is wrong.

The tram is definitely faster as far as HYM; its much of a muchness from there in my experience. However the delays are largely caused by SOV so lets increase the road network utilisation and stop the ridiculous wasted spending on it.

Depends on time of day. For specifically airport trips the tram will win at peaks every time due to skipping Roseburn and Costorphine. Off peak the airport bus probably wins, but only if it's convenient for you to get to Waverley Bridge
As a somewhat frequent flyer I have enjoyed having the tram stop at York Pl as it's a 10 minute walk with a carry on or with bigger bags a very high quality direct bus interchange. It also has a very *predictable* journey time so even if it is nominally longer I rate it very highly in that regard. My main bug bear just now is that it stops very early city-bound, something like 15-20 daily flights land after the last tram.
This can only improve when the tram comes to Leith as without a minor stabling point in the docks it is too time consuming to run late services into town.

I regularly see trams delayed at Haymarket as OLAMs block the junction by stopping on the yellow boxes.
Time for cow-catchers on the front of trams to deal with this.

Poor Tory MSP is clueless about transport. Good @EdinburghTrams & Bus Users Scot. quotes slapping down his stupidity"
Miles Briggs made an embarrassingly bad speech at PoP. I'd never heard of him previously and was surprised to see him get in on the list. He's not done a lot to improve my view of him.

This is the same Miles Briggs who is waging a campaign to allow him and other drivers to drive directly into Waverley station again. Despite the previously announced plans to extend platforms over the old taxi rank...

All the commenters praising the excellent service 22 have clearly had no experience of it spending up half an hour or more to get from the Gyle to Stenhouse at the evening rush hour (not that I'm saying it's not excellent, but the congestion especially at S Gyle Access can be very bad)
Posted 7 years ago # -
@stickman other more intimately involved with the programme are better placed to speak, but my recollection is that he was the only Tory to accept our invitation for them to nominate a speaker, and even then I had to chase him to get a reply.
I've been amused by his recent policy-related interventions. One was asking Edinburgh council to build a community centre for Morningside because current residents there have to rely on third sector and privately operated venues. Maybe he's in the wrong party?
Oh, and the other one was calling for a law requiring batteries to be included with toys when sold. To be fair, that's obviously a jokey tweet, but he represents a party that's all about deregulation??!

It is literally impossible to cram more buses onto the 22 route, yes it's a great service, but once frequencies are below 5 mins (I believe it can easily be every 2-3 at rush hour) the service rapidly detiorates for all. It's a single bus route trying to serve every new employment area Edinburgh has built in the past 20 years.
If the tram could run more frequently than it does it would swallow even greater crowds going to Edinburgh Park and Gogar, freeing up bus seats for those who want to continue using intermediate stops through Stenhouse. Except they can't- not infrequently even their current service is turned short as congestion on Princes St is too much.

Oh, was he the chap in the garish shorts? The sort of outfit that a non-cyclist thinks they should wear to cycle in (but ending up being neither person who does fitness cycling regularly and so has suitable kit for this nor person in normal clothes who happens to be riding a bicycle...).

re stickman "... block the junction by stopping on the yellow boxes." London and Cardiff have cameras to detect and penalise drivers who do this. Edinburgh should get them too, imho.

“But now the trams are here, they just want to get on with it. The fact this inquiry has risen in cost so significantly is proof it was the wrong thing to do.”

Five million? - you could build a cycle "track" for that ;-)

THE union representing the Capital’s bus and tram drivers is calling for umbrella body Transport for Edinburgh to be scrapped.
Unite says there is still uncertainty about where the £472,000 budget for the arms-length company will come from. And it is challenging city leaders to justify such a cost at a time of council cuts
Transport for Edinburgh (TfE) was set up in 2013 as the parent company for Lothian Buses and Edinburgh Trams and is wholly owned by the city council. But it was said at the time it would not have its own staff and would rely on existing Lothian Buses and council personnel.
