The Trams Granton to the Edinburgh BioQuarter and Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and Beyond consultation for the expansion of the tram network will begin later this month.

The City of Edinburgh Council will be seeking views on the proposed new tram routes from Granton in the north of the city to Edinburgh BioQuarter and Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and beyond into the region.

The consultation will start on Monday 25 August 2025 and run for 12 weeks, finishing on Monday 17 November 2025. It will be hosted on the Council’s Consultation Hub.

This consultation will inform the development of a Strategic Business Case (SBC) for the expansion which will then be presented to the Transport and Environment Committee in 2026.

Further information, including details of public events, will be issued in due course.

'Naming things is hard' strikes again.

    Trams: Granton to BioQuarter

Wait, we might extend to Musselburgh!

Trams: Granton to Bioquarter and Beyond

Hold on, nobody knows where or what the Bioquarter is!

I'm just salty they didn't take on my suggestion of 2 Trams 2 Furious

Also seen today, 'reminder' from Edinburgh Trams that they won't be accepting cycles during festival season.

Last week my 14yo somewhat randomly met up with a pal in Dalry, said they were going to 'cycle around saughton park'.

Somewhat unsurprisingly, they ended up going down the WoL and exploring various places. Eventually ended up in Granton and then took the tram home (they had young scot cards, but no one asked to see them!).

Nice that they have the freedom/infra/govt support to do that.

By Councillor Kumar for answer by the Convener of the Transport and Environment Committee a meeting of the Council on 30 October 2025

At a local community council meeting in Newington/Southside Ward, a member raised concerns that a consultation event on trams was very poorly organised and failed to maximise public information and engagement with local residents.

Given the significance of this project and its direct impact on communities along the proposed route, can the Convener clarify the following: What specific feedback – positive or negative – has been received regarding the organisation and delivery of the tram consultation events?

While the council would be expected to provide some funding for the project, it will not become a reality without huge levels of investment from the Scottish Government. "You will not be able to build that at scale otherwise,” City of Edinburgh Council chief executive Paul Lawrence told The Herald earlier this year.

    My bold

Edinburgh World Heritage (EWH) has serious and significant concerns about the impacts of the proposed tram project on major heritage structures within the World Heritage Site. In particular, given the evidence that is available at this time, we do not support the use of South Bridge as a route option due to the potentially serious implications and damage to this Category A-listed Georgian “megastructure”, which is one of the most important attributes of the World Heritage Site. This and other concerns on impacts to the Site’s Outstanding Universal Value (the characteristics, receptors and qualities underpinning Edinburgh’s inscription as a World Heritage Site)

Do they have a point here? I’m not a bridge engineer but I’d be pretty surprised if there had been no consideration of tram load, vibration and other engineering concerns by the folks both employed and consulting CEC before this alignment was put to the public…

“Do they have a point here?“

Certainly my belief/assumption is that rails spread weigh effectively meaning less weight impact on the road and below.

I’m sure that any trench digging (like Leith Walk) to ‘move services’ would be more challenging - but again, ‘must have been thought about’.

Though as most people probably don’t really think about SB being a bridge, maybe…

Advice urgently sought; do I tell readers of yonder digest that will be published in the wee hours of Monday that they can still respond to the tram consult? Does closes 17th November mean midnight on the 17th? Is time real? Thanks for any light and / or physics insight you can shed

    Closes 17 Nov 2025

Pretty sure Tinternet made midnight ‘normal’.

(Previously ‘end of working day’ common)

Cheers - the Spokesfolks seem to reckon so also. Think I recall the same from a previous consultation.

The deadline for people to give their views is midnight on Monday, November 17.

Transport convener Stephen Jenkinson has welcomed the scale of the response and believes it could be a record. "It's certainly heading towards it," he said.

The city council is seeking a record £222m compensation from the leading global law firm who advised it on the building of the city’s tram line, the Edinburgh Inquirer can reveal.

I don't look forward to the anti-tram voices in the city adding '£222m compensation' to their litany of unrelated facts rolled out to back up not building further lines.

Yeah but (if CEC ‘wins’ any of it) it would be money in - though not enough to build more line(s)

If CEC gets any money, will SG ask for some of it?

Certainly I’m sure people interested in housing, education, potholes etc will expect some ‘compensation’ for past budget cuts.
