I am a long time cycle campaigner, active (and experienced/competent) bicycle user, NEPN fan and opposer of the tram on the Roseburn Corridor (the first time too)
I am also inclined to disagree with SA, not necessarily because he is always wrong, but I have certainly long ago given up giving him the benefit of any doubts
I’m also inclined to agree with DaveMc, not least because he tends to have a factual basis for his beliefs/ideas
It’s almost comical that SA believes it’s all a political conspiracy against his Party, when that Party has conspired with others to affect the way CEC has operated in recent years
It perhaps sounds like I have a ‘but’ coming
Not really
More about the need for thinking this through
I meet people who are in favour of trams to Granton for perfectly good reasons but (in my view) being ‘optimistic’ and not seeing any bigger picture
There seems to be an assumption that a tram connection to central Edinburgh would lead to more houses in Granton and less poverty in north Edinburgh generally
Both could be true (though probably not related except in a statistically unhelpful way - more ‘less poor’ people in the area without actually improving things for others)
Plans for the area often known as the Waterfront, have altered or largely disappeared in the last couple of decades - remember all the marinas and high rise apartments on newly reclaimed land?
There have been delays and hold-ups, but probably more related to ‘the crash’ than uncertainty about the tram
At present a better bus service would help. Of course that is almost certainly seen as ‘unprofitable’ but subsidising it and making it better, more frequent etc would be cheaper than any tram line
Additionally there should be a sound case for significantly improving (and maintaining) the, already above average, walk/cycle network in the area (and the significant connections to the south and east)
This is where the ‘but’ comes in
Much as ‘the tram would make all the good things happen’ is either naive or dishonest, any idea that ‘most people’ could/should cycle is largely unrealistic and not entirely helpful
That said
It’s a perfect argument for expanding the Voi network to Wardie, Pilton, Granton, Muirhouse, Silverknowes etc
