Yep, poor stuff - however, as my wife says it may give more publicity to the outrage that is cyclists treatment by other road users in this country.

    Get well soon Wiggo

Pretty bad. Van pulled out in front of him. Long field of view to the right. Assuming that bloke just couldn't see out the van properly because he pulled so far around to the left inorder to join the lane faster.

Hope he's ok. Would really suck if he was badly injured.

Team Sky statement says Bradley Wiggins will be in hospital overnight, but has sustained no serious injuries. Ride safe y'all!

Just heard the news on BBC radio 4s Today Programme, where Wiggins was described as having "Collided with a van" making it very much sound like the bike was speeding round the corner and then hit the poor van.

    It will change nothing.

There will be a discussion of if roads are safe for bikes, and pundits will conclude cyclists should train indoors.

Turns out to be white astra woman, according to some report I read somewhere.
Sky website was saying his injuries were not too serious. I hope this is so.
    Get well soon Wiggo!

(Oh, and I mangaged to have a cycling is safe/dangerous/helmet debate with the guys in the office as a result.)

The BBC report says white Astra van woman. She pulled out in front of him. An eyewitness said he turned blue which doesn't sound exactly trivial.

Blue lips could just be shock + cold , plus if he was riding hard at the time (likely!) most of the bloody would have been in his legs!

True. I tend to start turning blue myself if I stop moving about for any length of time.

Radio this morning used the accident as an excuse to trot out his ill-advised comments about helmet use this summer. Naturally, nothing was mentioned about how dangerous motor vehicles are.

It is with some trepidation I ask this and a one word answer might be advisable but....

Was BW wearing one at the time?

Must admit, I've wondered if he had lights on his bike? Long training day, maybe not expecting to get back so late, would a 'Pro' even think to put lights on their bike?

Hope he gets well soon though.

I'd urge you not to read the comments under the Telegraph story, if only because they are so predictable. An irrelevant rant about 'pavement cyclists' and 'red-light-jumpers' appears as early as the third comment and before I'd scrolled to the bottom of the page - I resisted going further - I was left with the impression that he quite clearly got what he, and every other cyclist, deserved.

haha Min - you should think about starting casual blood doping. It's a good remedy for those of you with circulation issues ;)

Broken ribs apparently, perhaps why he turned blue so quickly - hard to breathe, I guess. I've also read that he was on a mountain bike going out to meet some friends, and not coming back from a training ride.

    Hope he recovers OK.

  20. "I've also read that he was on a mountain bike going out to meet some friends, and not coming back from a training ride."

Report last night was it was a team training ride, SKY car behind the group.

On the helmet thing. He has broken ribs and a damaged wrist, not sure there's any relevance whatsoever in it being mentioned.

Also, on Tuesday night a 62 year old cyclist, who was hit by a car on the 2nd, died in hospital form his injuries. While I deplore what's happened to Brad and wish him a speedy recovery, he can recover. Cult of celebrity?

PS mentioned on Twitter last night, accurately, that it reflects how Olympic + TdF champ getting knocked off his bike is news; normal Joe Bloggs being killed on a bike is kind of expected.

From the Sun article they were clearly there filming the event. It sounds rather insane:

“I could see a pushbike, like a mountain bike, and the front wheel was all buckled. I went into the garage and asked what was going on. She said, ‘Bradley Wiggins has just been knocked off his bike’.

I can't help but think there's a pretty piece of irony here, given his response when asked what could be done for safety re: that chap being dragged along under a bus at the Olympics.

I suppose in the grand scheme of things it might dilute the weight of his previous "advice", even if it doesn't prompt a more thoughtful response when he's next asked (although you'd hope it would - needs a chat with Boardman?)

Don't bother with any of the daily rags, very predictable.

Good luck to Wiggo, and hope he recovers soon.

Have to say this does rather reinforce my prejudices about drivers of Vauxhall Astras. They may not be as aggressive as drivers of Beemers or Audis, but they are often just really bad, ie. dangerous drivers in my experience. Don't think it's just the poularity of the model either, otherwise I'd think the same about, say, drivers of Nissan Micras.

News just coming in that Shane Sutton has head injuries (Bruising, and bleeding on the brain) after a crash on A6. No more details yet.

"It is extremely rare that our riders and coaches are hurt while out cycling on the road, even rarer that two incidents should occur in a short space of time, and we wish Shane and Bradley a speedy recovery.

"Cycling is not an intrinsically dangerous activity but there is much more to be done to improve conditions for cyclists on the roads. British Cycling is calling on the government to put cycling at the heart of transport policy to ensure that cycle safety is built into the design of all new roads, junctions and transport projects, rather than being an afterthought."

Presume that is just there to "head off" (ho ho) the usual knee jerk response...

John Beattie's lunchtime Radio Scotland show tried to engage in debate by inviting a CTC guy to speak on Brad's 'collision' with a van. He made good point about cycle training but had to listen to the long list of heinous crimes committed by cyclists as they spread righteousness and fear throughout our lands!

    He also pointed out that:
    • a recent survey only got 10% of respondents to agree that cycling is a nuisance that should be controlled.

Emails to the programme were depressingly predictable - I find it frightening that people still want to somehow regulate cycling to catch offenders (ie - anyone moving when traffic is gridlocked). Of course cars never have fake or missing plates and no insurance and if they do they are immediately booked (!)

Finally the old 'listening to music while cycling' one came up. Cycling proficiency is judged on what you can see. People are happy to drive with music despite maybe being in a vehicle with less visibility than a bike.

Amazing how many cyclists email in to apologise for other cyclists. So we have cyclists guilty by association and the rest who 'deserve to be treated with the respect they give other road users'. (ie none). I think the BBC should consider carefully before raising the hate level too much on this subject considering that hit and runs with no action are all too common.
