I'm tempted to take my Gatorskins for run down the NEPN this evening to see where gritting has got to. Plenty of places to get off onto the roads.

SRD - yeah, every evening I'm told that "I'm not tired and I don't need to go to bed". Doesn't mean it is true though...

I'm off home now - time to brave the icy roads! I want to see if my gritting of the pavements down from Slateford Road to Slateford Green still have an ice free path or if I didn't put enough grit down... will find out in a bit.

Take care all [I plan to cycle incredibly slowly!]

Will go out with my shovel later and spread it around if I can find the key to unlock it.

    Didn't know shovels needed keys.

    You'll need a trailer too.

Seasons Grittings by the Magnificent Octopus, on Flickr

Best I could do with my wee garden spade. I like to think at least I've created a "grit trap" at the bottom of the hill to allow for safe stopping without fear of shooting out onto Marchmont Road.

It really helped that the grit had been dumped onto a pile of leaf mulch.

The keys are for the bike lock that secures my garden tools together.

One man. One small garden spade. 20 minutes. Can achieve what Edinburgh Council can't.

    Ah it's brilliant.

Just to report for SRD's piece of mind...... Lionfish got home without incident.

There's another pile of grit over at the side of the Pavillion. Would need a trailer and a better shovel, but much more could be achieved, especially between Meadow Place and Argyle Place.

gotta ask did you take some over the crossing to the junction opposite the pavilion? was sheet black ice and I saw one lady come off there as I was walking down lemington walk tonight. Poor dear was in tears but seemed generally ok, she said her house wasn.t far but I wish Id advised her to get home before the shock wears off (and the pain comes on).

Thought I was being silly not riding home untill I saw that, had my heart in my mouth every time someone flew past me down that hill.

Some photos from the path between Balbirnie Place and Silverknowes this evening.

Emailed to Andrew Burns. There was some evidence of an attempt at gritting but only of a very cursory sort. A light dusting.

Genius! Even if they DID bother to grit Leamington Walk and MMW properly, everyone can fall over and break their ankles on the 100m section they've missed out!

gotta ask did you take some over the crossing to the junction opposite the pavilion?

Admittedly only a tiny amount as my spade wasn't up to it. There's plenty more grit on other side of road (and could be scooped up from where the pile was) but a flat, snow-shovel is really required.

Holy crap. Glad I used my car to commute the last three days. Is this the state of most of the cycle paths at the moment? I was considering cycling tomorrow, but not if it's like this.

the innocent had been very cursorily gritted this morning, you had to pick your way between patches with ice either side :) at least it was done.

  19. I went out looking for some ice to test the spikes on tonight and didn't find any. Will see if the ice patches are still on the Innocent tomorrow.

Which city did you sat you live in again?

Isit possible you did find ice but didn't know it cause your spikes worked so well?

  21. Went down the Figgy, but the paths were dry as a bone!

You'll have to try further afield than Edinburgh's Riviera, Wilmerton!

Where the fallen down fence was (on the office side of the pedestrian crossing with the steep ramp, just before the back of Ocean Terminal) is a bit like that, but the main path is OK at least as far as five-ways.

TBF I'd drive if I didn't have studs.

However, I lied earlier, you can apparently get 30mm studded tyres, which might be narrow enough as you have proper mudguards.

We can have an office try-out of mine if the car park freezes over.

Interestingly that same website does replacement spikes for the Marathon Winters (and others). I've ordered a few packs.

This might be famous-last-words, but minimoth and I took the canal this morning. There were a few patches that were a bit hairy, but it wasn't too bad. My desktop says it's +4C outside... and the met office says it'll remain above freezing for the rest of the week. So I guess this thread is done :)

Metcheck says there'll be snow/ice next week, but I don't really trust weather forecasts > 3 days.

I think the last couple of days can be considered a practice run for the council in cycle-path gritting.

How is the NEPN today? minimoth might head home that way.

  27. Innocent Path is treated enough for it to be wet rather than icy from the tunnel (including grit in the tunnel) as far as Duddingston Road West (which is the priority 1 section) - east of there out towards Bingham all bets are off, you're riding on an ice rink.

No idea about NEPN. I've been avoiding it in the morning if the previous evening was bad so I didn't go near it today. Generally, it's been passable with care so I plan to go back that way this evening, hopeful that the Council may have scattered some more grit now that Cllr Burns has passed my photos on to colleagues.

"now that Cllr Burns has passed my photos on to colleagues"

    Thanks for doing that.

In spite of all the Twitter activity yesterday (some involving Cllr. Burns) it didn't work as well as expected/promised for Leamington Walk.

But gritting (more) off-road paths is council policy - and they have the money - unfortunately, sometimes, it still need politicians to make sure it happens! (And people to tell them).

I hope some people contacted AB about Broomhouse Path.
