The search for a name for the new Forth Replacement Crossing has been officially launched. Members of the public are being asked to choose a name for the bridge, which is Scotland's largest infrastructure project in a generation. A panel of civic, business and community representatives will consider all entries, and then shortlist names for a final public vote next year.

Oooh, I'm sure we can come up with a few suggestions, eh readers?

'Petrolhead Promenade' springs to mind. Or how about 'Wee Eck's Virility Symbol'?
Or there's the pithy 'Massive White Elephant', or 'Public Cash Incinerator'.

    that big bridgiemabob thingy

Is my favourite so far. Most of the suggestions are dire, some people have read too many business b*llshit at work and are slipping words like "aspire" and "vision" in.

Lots of mention of the word "gateweay". Why would you call a bridge a gateway? It's a bridge? It's not like you'd call an actual gateway a bridge. So why the other way around? It's a bridge. B.R.I.D.G.E. Bridge.

Someone has proposed "the missing link". Made me giggle slightly, that they think there's something missing when a bridge is being built next to 2 existing ones that have been there for a combined total of some 200-odd years.

Then there's the debate between calling it the "third Forth bridge" or the "fifth Forth bridge". I'm with the latter, as the Clackmannanshire and Kincardine crossings are on the side commonly accepted as the Forth. Above them it's the river.

I'd suggest one (The Grand Temple Of Car Worship?) but the suggestions are moderated and they demand your email address so they can share it with all their subcontractors, I don't want to be spammed by a load of insane car fetishists...

If you are worried about sharing email addresses I'd recommend using a disposable one like mailinator. It's receive only, but no sign up is required, make up an address on the fly and an inbox is created when email arrives for them. Quality!

    FWIW I suggested Connach Brig.

The site is moderated censored to keep satirical/critical name suggestions out. Only suitably grandiose, nationalistic and pompous names allowed, it seems. Someone managed to slip "Beamer Bridge" through the net, also "Tam Cowan Bridge" I notice... ;-)

Oh, I like these that slipped through: "Bridge over the river why?", "brig a doon", "Jammy dodger", "Bridgey", also "The Pyramids" and the "Fly Ower o' Scotland"... :-)) The funniest has to be "Forth Bridge II - The Revenge".

It's built on the Beamer Rock?

    Common Sense Suspension

Technically it should be the Common Sense Cable-stay :)

    How about "the National Monument?"

Ah, I was thinking "Beamer" as in BMW or embarassment/blushing (He's got a beamer!).

Those who tw@t may wish to follow on Twitter?

@crowriver I hadn't thought of that! Perhaps it's one to all vote for as it might slip past the censor's eye, yet has that slightly double-edged meaning.

Forth Replacement Crossing name shortlist revealed

The five names are Caledonia Bridge, Firth of Forth Crossing, Queensferry Crossing, Saltire Crossing and St Margaret's Crossing.

I voted for St. Margaret's, I thought Saltire and Caledonia were tacky, Firth of Forth too much of a mouthful and Queensferry - well it's not really a bridge to connect the two places as such, just happens to run through/over/past them.

  20. Fairly uninspiring shortlist really. St Meg's would probably get my vote as well.

Doesn't really matter what it's officially called, it'll be "the New Bridge" or "the Bridge" for short.

St Margaret's was my choice too. But I agree with PS, it'll just become 'the bridge' since it simply replaces the current one for most people.

The Forth Bridge is the only one on the uk rail network with no number. It's just THE bridge.

Nobody uses the real names for the Squinty and Squiggly in Glasgow. I didn't even know what the Squiggly's real name was.

Ayr has an Auld and New bridge… but the new one is not as old as it should be because the original new bridge was washed away.

Much like the milennium bridge in London became the bouncy bridge.

Yes, apparently the Squinty is also called the Millenium bridge. Looks like the council thought long and hard on that one.

Looks like my suggestion to rename both road bridges as the Craig Reid Bridge and the Charlie Reid Bridge was not taken up then. Shame.

I would have preferred the original Scottish musical Reid brothers Jim and William.

How long before the crossing is replaced with bridge? It is a bridge, why use crossing??
