    Registration now open folks!

    http://www.etapecaledonia.co.uk/index.html

Got mine in early and bagged a place. 7000 people logged interest with only 5000 places available I believe so could go quickly (either that or I've just been gullible and fallen for marketing hype!)

First time at this one for me so looking forward to it!

Hey have a good one! I was gonna enter it this year but at the last minute had a massive quandary trying to justify the £63 entry fee..... the quandary won in the end and I've resolved to just do some more audax's. I've entered the kinross sportive and will probably do the bealach again so that's my sportive allowance for the year. Good luck.

Aye Audaxes, the tight wads Sportives... ;-)

Yep - the fee has always been a factor against this for me (along with the huge numbers of cyclists and the difficulty in getting accommodation).

I'll be looking for events of sportive and audax nature once the doc has given me the go ahead.

  5. How much?!?

Crikey - planning on doing some more miles next year, certainly a couple of audaxes, and seriously pondering the Bealach again...

Well it is a closed roads event, but still.

A tenner for the Snow Roads 300k audax is a bargain in comparison. You get a bridie at the end too!

You do have to cycle 300k though

    @amir, nobody's forcing you. ;-)

Well one could do the Three Glens Explorer in September, 164km, for £7. Two controls with food and water provided, plus a bowl of soup at the arrivée (and as many cakes as you can carry). Most 100k audaxes are a bit over distance, so compare with the EC. Some are as little as £2 to enter!

Okay you don't compete with 5000 other cyclists, no razzmatazz, no closed roads. But you've still plenty change out of 60-odd quids...

Was perhaps a bit quick to book and didn't really take in the price I was paying! Still, closed roads make it worthwhile! Did the London to Brighton this year which was mostly closed and makes such a difference!

Of course now I'm struggling to get accommodation...hmm.

£63 and nae chance off a bed........or, do it another time with your friends and have the pick of pitlochrys fleshpots/hostels etc.

Done it twice this year, lovely quiet roads, and lots more beer money ;-)

@Deckard - I didn't book until quite late last year (was my first year)

We staying in Birnam by Dunkeld it's about a half hour drive to Pitlochry (Ideally I think you want to stay in the town itself (booked after the event last year), but if stuck may be worth giving them a try) Did a great spread the morning of the event. Good Italian/Indian in walking distance.

Having never done it, can I ask the really daft Questions

How bad an idea is it to drive up from Edin in morning?

I see you have to register in person on Fri or Sat, so if you can't get accomodatipn you'll need another trip up. I assume you can't get a friend to register you.

I think trying to drive up would be a real pain. Last time I did it they specified photo ID but I'm not sure they actually looked at it. Bear in mind it is a pre-7:30 start in the morning & with so many entrants it would mean a very early start to allow for delays. Not sure I would want to do it that way.

You need to register the night before. you wouldn't get close to Pitlochry on the morning. You would end up cycling to the start of the crush of bikes waiting for their start group. There isn't any parking in Pitlochry, the event uses one of the car parks I recollect. The Atholl Palace will do a deal of dinner bed and breakfast for you and your bike. But that will be expensive. The closed roads are good but you are surrounded by other cyclists for much of the route. Although my one time was the first carpet tack year so we all bunched up again at the top of schiehallion. It is good but it is pricey

You can get a friend to register for you - they just need photo id. There is event parking which you can prepay before the event itself. It isn't too far away from the start.

If you can I would stay in town. Easier start able to soak up the atmosphere. Not such an early start. Spend an evening phoning around - I'm sure you will find something.

I wouldn't mind doing this one day, but I've always been put off by the huge hike in price over an audax (especially when the roads round there, going by my experience of riding them on audaxes, are so quiet as to be practically closed anyway - compared with Edin).

The atmosphere is probably awesome though, just like PBP.

My brother and I have decided to forgo this, will look at other sportives/Audaxes during the year I think. And anyway it clashes with a hillwalking trip to the Lake District already long planned, didn't want to chop several days off at the start to fit this in. Oh well...

No cash? Sold out? No problem, just download the route from the website and do it the following week when there are no cyclists (or tacks ;) ) on the road. Never really got the concept of paying to go for a cycle?

@Puzzle - thanks for the tip!

We're thinking along the same lines. Stay somewhere within 20 - 30 mins although as has already been highlighted the parking may be an issue when I get there. Think my better half might end up pushing me out the car whilst in motion!

There is some accomodation left in Pitlochry, but you need deep pockets as some seem to be charging a premium with a minimum 2 night stay.

    Booked also :-)

Sounds like the accomodation might just need to be my tent, somewhere within pootling distance !

@Snowy - that's what I was starting to think but then it occured to me that the campsites will likely be very 'sociable' on the Saturday night which would be difficult to resist!

Cue 81 mile cycle ride after 3 hours kip and a raging hangover!

I decided to enter on a charity place in the end, I am also running a marathon that month so £300 should be easier to raise. Looking forward to it.

If you entered on a "Charity" place then you might find this a good read... http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/bike-blog/2012/jun/20/charity-bike-ride?commentpage=1

Why? If you entered on a charity place then you need to raise money for the charity. It is not a secret.

OK yes but did anyone know that none of the entry money goes to the charity and only after they've sold 4500 tickets do they allow the Charity folk to enter and even then none of their entry money goes to the charity and they have to raise £250 each. I just feel that it's false advertising is all.... sorry no offense meant.

Recombodna - dont think you need to apologise, your post is not offensive, but IMG are. It only confirms what I have thought for years.

I think this was discussed with respect to the Etape Pennines. The fact of the matter is that it appears that the only people who are unaware of the situation are those who haven't entered. I have yet to meet anyone who has done these events who believed that any of the entry money went to charity.

I know a few people that have entered and feel a bit peeved about it. I don't care how people spend their money it's up to the individual. The fact that the Marie Curie logo is all over the event would make me think that a percentage of the entry would go to the charity. I'm glad that I found this out before I entered. I may just go and ride it anyway strava my result and donate some money to marie curie and buy my self a nice treat.... how good can a £63 goodie bag really be.
