Is it not the case [can't be bothered looking] it up, that "loading" permits you to be away from your vehichle for up to 5 mins?

Even when there are loading restrictions you are still allowed to set down or pick up a passenger.

I'm sure there is but I assume the passenger being collected should be on the pavement waiting for the car. Not thats likely to happen in winter at 4am.

Double yellows have a two minute restriction don't they?

"And they park on double yellows ALL day every day on Hatton Place in Marchmont and that's NEVER enforced"

I live nearby, and my son goes to school round the corner - cant recall the above happening regularly, but if it does, you need to call it in - just call the police - badger them and they will deal with it.

A little reminder about what Edinburgh with "free parking" looks like Grassmarket, c. 1972

    Yuck!
No wonder nobody used to like being there.

That's how Leith Walk looks today.

I'm all in favour of a complete free-for-all one day a week on a weekday. All traffic lights would be switched off and parking allowed anywhere. The only rule would be a blanket 20mph limit. It could be called "Appreciate buses, traffic wardens and cycles day".

The City would grind to a halt and there would quickly be calls to regulate parking, enforce bus lanes, build cycle paths, etc...

I was thinking of having a day where ALL cyclists with cars drive and all people who take bus instead of driving drive. It would be insane gridlock in Edinburgh. Might be good to make a point...

National Drive to Work Day - I'd mooted the idea a few years back, but lack the resources of time to really push it. Someone actually set it up this year, and it was last week. Yeah, there was a lot of promotion about it. I think there's mileage int he diea, though, to become an annual point-maker.

That more or less happened the last time there was a bus strike. I cycled in and it was a wall of cars the whole way. It was a number of years ago though.

It was the opposite during the fuel strike. Portobello High Street was almost empty of traffic. Remember the cyclist who brought the lorry demo to a halt on Princes Street?

I don't recall the cyclist who brought the lorry demo to a halt on Princes Street, do tell us! Did they just stop on Princes Street and the lorry drivers refused to run them over?

Edinburgh council staff to lose free parking

DOZENS of councillors and staff at Edinburgh City Council face losing their free parking perks as part of planned £22 million budget cuts.

The local authority wants to impose parking charges at its headquarters in the city centre and at reserved spaces in a nearby car park.

The move, which is proposed as part of the council’s budget from April, is expected to raise £65,000 a year.

Pretty disgusting that they have free parking at all.
