Makes a change from all the cars and white vans that normally block it. Cycle the QBC daily and have yet to have a clear route for the short distance I use it for.

Forgive my ignorance (i've been away) but is this Quality Bike Corridor nothing more than a rather narrow advisory bicycle lane and some red road chip?

There have been Xmas tree wars with charity organisations being chased off the pitches of the regular sellers. I would avoid these places if possible

Anyone asked the Council if they have a license for occupying the carriageway? I think that these are usually required, even for something below the level of roadworks, for example, a skip.

Yes, nothing more than an advisory lane, and often much less (i.e. nothing!).
Apparently "quality" has a technical meaning to road planners, which doesn't match the common usage - and I'm not being sarcastic, that has actually been claimed!

"is this Quality Bike Corridor nothing more than .. "
Oh it's so much more than that ...
It is (probably now was!) a CEC 'flagship project' welcomed by many/some/few.
Initially known as the QBiC (i = improvement. Only the most miserly would deny some degree of actual i) a trip by Andrew Burns - accompanied by three CECers - revised the official view.
There was then some acknowledgement that the use of the Q word was part of the problem.
Whatever the view of the actually design, parking issues and 'failure to dare something different' the actual implementation left something to be desired.
I think it was reasonably to expect a 'magic carpet of smoothness' from KB to Teviot. Some parts were resurfaced to add the dubious chips, but the whole project failed to engage all parts of the council and make sure that potholes and rough surfaces that could reasonably be expected to be fixed by normal maintenance were done before the QB(i)C opened.
SOME are still 'waiting' for improvement.

Fixed that for you Chdot. ;-)

I'm going to start cycling this way every morning from next week, photograph it every morning, and send the picture to the councillors for the area every morning. Who fancies doing the same?

Or the grinch - which is how it would be spun in the EEN.

I thought the word on the street was that these xmas tree places are best avoided by councillors and CCE alike, for reasons I decline to articulate...

Personally I'm fed up of society giving in like that.

"It is an offence to obstruct the free passage of the highway. (Section 137 Highways Act 1980)"
"The offence can be tried in the Magistrates' Court only*. The maximum penalty is a fine up to level 3 (currently £1,000). There is no power to send a person convicted of highway obstruction to prison."
* OK, that's England and Wales, assume it's Shurriff in Scotland?

Apparently it's getting visited today (thanks to Sara Dorman cc'ing the 'South Team' on Twitter).

Any news on this? (will be riding home that way tonight).
Posted 10 years ago # -
Trees in planting boxes on it on Sat morning - as per the twitter pic above.

Can't access twitter at work, but if they're still there on my way home tonight I'll take a snap and build on the tweeting.

Anyone been by there today yet? The Edinburgh South team have (so far, not checked since 9am) not said anything in response to the video I posted.
When I first rode by on the pother side of the road the blockage didn't look too bad, then doubling back realised in the dark I hadn't seen how far the trees were protruding from their pots (which themselves are tipped on the kerb and it's feasible they could topple over).

Anyone been by there today yet?
Blocking just over half the 'QBC' about half an hour ago. With a 'Santa' waving (distracting?) passing drivers.

Another ride by on the way home tonight then (which I don't like as there are bits of the QBC that feel decidedly unsafe, primarily the section by the library heading south which has no lane and is really poorly surfaced - ah yes, that QUALITY Bike Corridor...)

I was pleased to move away from the QBC. Every day the bitter irony of it made me a little angry, and I didn't like that my better half sometimes had to use it.

@urbancyclist @CityCycling @CyclingEdin We appreciate this is an ongoing issue. Roads inspectors visiting again today & will follow up with a letter giving us power to uplift any obstruction if it remains. Thanks for your tweets"

I hope that includes uplifting the Defender that's often parked there...

Yeah, there were two cars parked just after the trees last night as well. Be interesting to see if anything happens...
Posted 10 years ago # -
Depends on the lines painted on the roads. A physical obstruction can be interpreted differently if its a tree or vehicle.
Posted 10 years ago # -
Yes the trees and the vehicles will be entirely different when it comes to enforcing their removal. Unless that is they are abandoned vehicles or have expired VED or no insurance.
Posted 10 years ago # -
Don't forget - there's a Flickr group to put pics of the QBC in.
