    "1. Shenaze Reade" - on a BMX!

    A proper star in Edinburgh!

It was rather chilly and windswept on the Mound but we enjoyed the racing. Female final was very impressive, a real breakaway leader.

I take it the cycle show were doing some filming.

What were the 2 "others" riding?

By the time I'd eaten tonight, I didn't think I would get there in time to make the most of it. Had I known Shenaze was taking part, I'd have made the effort. At least there'd have been one BMXer in Edinburgh who could ride fast on the road without looking just a little bit daft? ;-)

I wondered about the Cycle Show too when I saw Anna listed.

And I wonder what the definition difference (if any) was between "mountain bike" and "mtb". Surely nobody was running full suss?

It was a good night's entertainment. Not especially mobbed, but enough of a crowd to get an atmosphere - especially good that they had a big screen - although cold and windy.

    Here's us in from earlier...

    P1060954

Given we were moving twice the weight and 3 times the number of people, I'm happy with our result and we weren't last!!!

Some 'other' categories in the top 40. Tandems, folders? Not a course for recumbents?

I think the others were mostly modified mtb's. Skinny tyres and rigid forks, etc.

I scraped through the qualificiation and then crashed out my first heat - I was on the inside and a guy cut across and hit me, I over corrected and ended up hitting the barriers on the other side taking another rider out along the way.

Good to get into the first heat rust. Not so many people turn up to these events for fun these days you can be sure!

On a recumbent you could certainly do it but really just to show it can be done rather than do a 'time'. It's all about 'out-comforting' uprights you see! I have cycled right up Ramsay Lane to castle just for the 'fun' of it.

I do plan to do the SCMA longer hill challenge at EdFoC. I know it will take 4 mins up to Dunsapie Loch and the elite can do it in 2mins - but so what. if we really want to get people into cycling then there is a danger that making it look too pro puts people off.

Most 'bents have to drop down through the gears (bit like a tandem). Too many changes mean you lose your cadence. The real 'semi-pros' can do a course like this and maintain cadence throughout with one click down on the corner I reckon. Or no clicks if they ride single speed!

"if we really want to get people into cycling then there is a danger that making it look too pro puts people off."

I'm not sure about that. Thousands of small boys around the country playing football in the park and at school don't seem to be put off by the fact that the pro's are rather untouchable and (for the most part) also complete asshats.

Cycling has the "everyone can be a pro" aspect to it I think. Whether you're a pro-team rider, a pro CXer, a pro commuter or even a pro-recumbanteer!

I like that bike. Verging on practical-looking. If the rear wheel is on a stub axle, surely it's out of line with the front one though? Surely not?

Mmmmndunno. Millions of small children of either gender, exposed to near-ubiquitous references to association shoutball in popular media and the relative accessibility of the equipment and facilities, see that they only need to 1: be able to play football reasonably well and 2: male in order to be able to progress to the highest level. There are even people actively trawling to recruit promising youngsters, with the result that my nephew is now in some sort of youth team thing, at which point the additional requirements of 3: being prepared to allocate all remaining available spare time to training and 4: having parents with the time/resources to cart/send you all over the country and beyond to attend performances against other youth team things became apparent.

Cycling, meanwhile, requires more equipment from the very beginning, give or take some tradeoff between fanciness of equipment/availability of facilities between disciplines. It seems like there may be more/greater barriers earlier on, as well as the same dedication/selection/patronage stuff further up.

    Not just football.

That's how Chris Hoy developed as a BMXer.

I think same dedication (child/parents) applies to other sports and some aspects of music.

    Well...

    It is Mike Burroughs...

That's how it works on the 8 Freight.

But, that has a longer wheelbase - so I expect this one has an S-shaped mainframe.

I wonder if he's had Chris Boardman testing that round a velodrome track? :-D

    Continuing with the current theme.

    It is ShAnaze Reade!

To be fair her name seems to be mis-spelt frequently

She was absolutely amazing beating most of the men and winning the ladies final by a huge margin.

Also on a BMX. Much respect

How do you pronounce her name then? is it Sh-Anaze given the capital A which is not standard in the middle of a name.

Some people had good qualifying times but then do not appear in the top 40?

I thought it looked wrong when I copy and pasted it from the Red Bull site! You'd think they could get it right.

IIRC, it's pronounced "Shahnaize". Dangerous was just highlighting the incorrect letter with the use of a capital ;-)

You're welcome. I hadn't used the camera in ages, so managed to hit the stop button while I was filming you. (Hence 2 videos, rather than 1.)

Great Videos above. I was up next just behind the boy in the first video and was on my way back down the hill when the tandem was coming up. Great Effort.
