New Edinburgh (and surroundings) web sites (help wanted)

With all the recent discussions on 'tourism' and 'infrastructure' and 'bikes on cars' and 'getting people to explore more' I've decided to set up a couple of web sites.

Basic Wordpress type - so with 'category' pages and a running 'news blog'.

The idea is to highlight 'places to ride/visit' in Edinburgh, Lothians and Fife.

Initial thoughts are for (predominantly but not exclusively) road routes - for fasting riding or leisurely touring, routes not suitable for 'road' bikes - Pentlands, farm tracks etc. and (for want of more suitable terms) novice/family routes.

The other site would be a slightly more restrictive 'how to get out there' looking at the various routes out of Edinburgh (or at least 'beyond the bypass') - highlighing that they exist (and how they could be improved), suitability for commuting etc. Transport options too - not just 'ride all the way'.

I will also add training/skills 'facilities' - pump tracks etc.

But I want help with content - suggestions, photos (easier via Flickr but not essential).

ALSO I'm looking for people to be contributors/editors - ie add stuff directly. Not quite as 'open to all' as CCE - and a bit more of a learning curve if you've not used Wordpress (or similar).

BUT if you have ideas/contributions, you don't have to add them directly - that's just an option.

Is it for the "secret" routes? Or to cover the "official" ones.

Either way I'm happy to pitch in.

I'm happy to help. I've a bit of experience with WordPress.

"Either way I'm happy to pitch in"

    GREAT

I seem to remember you are better with Google Map annotation than me.

Make all the 'secret' ones as public as possible!

(And highlight the fact that some need signs - or better ones).

    @ Tom

    THANKS

With you and k there will have to be industrial and agricultural archeology pages!

    And links to existing info/pages.

I would certainly be interested in adding the sort of "and if you came down here 60 years ago, you'd have been in the middle of a mill" sort of information.

My google earth industrial / railway heritage map has grown to rather biblical proportions.

@chdot I'll have to upload it later as it sits on a google earth file at home.

Last night I was mapping out some interesting tramways in East Ayrshire and found about a whole heap of large pit villages up above Waterside that were never connected to any roads and which were abandoned in the 1930s-1950s and very little sign of them now remains.

    Ah OK.

Thought it was an online map.

    Sounds good!

If anyone has GPS trails of 'useful' routes good too.

EveryTrail trips with photos even better!

@chdot I could very easily make it online by sending the file from Google Earth to Google Maps. But it's still just a personal project.

    Fair enough.

Presume some 'basic' version could be exported as a 'taster' for the wider public(?)

@kapps there is an abandoned pit village in south lanarkshire near the opencast mine on the way from auchengray to Wilsontown. Name of Haywood. Not much to see as was abandoned a while back. Some old fellas out for a walk from Wilsontown were telling me about it.

Very happy to help going out to take photos, doodles and reports of what it's like to try taking a nine year old and a five year old on them.

    Great

    So you're doing Fife...

    Tom can tour the Lothians

I'll find the ways out of Edinburgh

And k has already done the past!

Oh. OK. I'd expected to be despatched on missions. But sure. I'll think about mapping out spidery trails from my house.

@chdot ta. Mapping out the old buildings onto the modern satellite layout can be quite rewarding. If you find uncovering old bits of wall rewarding!

The full file actually has pretty much every Scottish railway on it, although the industrial ones are only really complete for the Edinburgh environs.

Best think about plugging that phone in. 18% loss in 46 minutes seems fast.

If he started at 65, and went down to 47, isn't that a 28% loss?

True. It's gone down by 18 percentage points, a 28% fall. My bad.

I'm happy to get involved. I have various ways to get out of Edinburgh on a road bike from west of the city centre, and could be persuaded to try others... I can take slightly better photos than the ones on the "where to fix the road" thread, too.

    Thanks fimm.

That sounds like an ideal approach.

Should get something rolling by the w/e.

I think the two web site approach will make sense.

There will be some overlap/cross-reference but that should enhance rather than detract.

I'd offer to help too, except I didn't even know there were hidden routes out of Edinburgh. I'm looking forward to reading about them!
