  1. Got confirmation that Glenkinchie are doing tours on Easter Monday, so...

Plan is to leave from regular departure point PY at 10am. Not sure of the route yet - makes sense to head out the Innocent to begin with. All.... Fluid....

Home to Edinburgh by 4 (basically don't want to be out too late with work (boo!) the next day).

    So who fancies it?

P.s. standard tour, with a taste of Glenkinchie, is seven quid. I'm likely to take a bottle home - got space in the whisky cabinet ;)

  2. P.p.s. anyone know of a good place around Pencaitland-ish for lunch?

Drat, I fancy a ride out there but I don't have any holidays spare.

Hmm. I wonder. Need to check with the missus when she's home tomorrow but that would be the first decent ride in a long time.

Goblin Ha' is good - also good cafe in Gifford. Plus Tweedale Hotel.

Sounds good - Irene and I did drop into Glenkinchie to get our water bottles refilled when we took the Quetzal tandem on its first out of town tour.

    Water tasted good!

Would fancy it, but I think I'm going to work on Monday (and Friday) to save the holidays for a day when the weather is more conducive for a nice long ride in short sleeves...

  9. I think I'll put together a rough route. Probably 40 ish miles in total?

Day off. I'm in. New cap to wear, Monsieur Chrono-style.

Sounds great - just need to check it with Mrs M first. What kind of bike - road or something more heavy duty?

    Posted 11 years ago #
  12. I'd say road. I cycled down the Ormiston-Pencaitland Sustrans route about 3 weeks ago, and it's ridiculously muddy in places, so just avoiding that.

Looks like you are going to get a corking day for it. Alas I am down south. Enjoy.

I'm in - was in doubt due to chundering child, but she seems fine today. Weather looks good, but a bit chilly.

  15. If the weather is like it is today then should be a stunning ride out (if, as you say, a little cold). So still looking at 10am at PY (this does of course mean I'm riding up the Innocent to the rendez-vous, then back down it to go out, but hey ho).

GoogleMaps route out actually looks pretty good.

Oh, and if you turn round and I'm nowhere to be seen it'll likely be because some bird has flown across and I'm stopped with the camera out.

CycleStreets, 'offers' three routes that are pretty similar to each other -

    http://www.cyclestreets.net/journey/19622027

These involve the Pencaitland Path which may be muddy - or frozen, but perhaps best avoided on thin tyres.

On the iPhone app it also has "the shortest" which is very different and goes via Dalkeith and inevitable involves roads that are likely to be busier.

  17. This isn't a bad route outwards (though avoid the short section of A1 it seems to want to send us down).

And for lunch at the Goblin Ha?.

Homeward bound I reckon just Haddington, Longniddry, then along the coast. I may be suggesting this cos that then virtually passes my front door.

Happy for other lunch suggestions! Haven't really organised as much as I should!

I vote for passing your front door since that affords exciting opportunities to get your POP vest stash from you.

Have two potential other bike events. But would like to do Glenkinchie.
Would also like to take Quetzal tandem out but need navigator in back seat. Ideally less tall and lighter than me. No previous experience necessary. Can freewheel too.
    Pm if that sounds interesting.

    "Can freewheel too"

Would be useful as a cycletaxi!

It's a lovely day out (though very nippy - -2.5 degs - when I left).

Have a great time and think of those of us working hard. Don't forget to listen out for the skylarks (an even better lift to the spirits than a wee tipple).

    That's a lot of Councillors ;-)

Enjoy the ride all. I'm hoping to make a swift departure from work just in time for the forecast sunshine. Will probably head east rather than west, though.

    Lunch in Gifford (now)

  29. Lovely ride folks (if a little cold and windy at times). I was yo-yoing off the back a fair bit with any uphill - there are some fit cyclists on here.

Lost ARobComp after the Glenkinchie tour to brother-wedding drama; and after Gifford chdot and the CTC lady (whose name I can't remember, sorry!) disappeared from view. We stopped, even had a wee ride back to a long straight, but there was no sighting. Oh, and all of this after a PY with Arelcat turning up with a stonking velomobile (that didn't come on the whisky ride), and Laidback, who was accompanying the monster bike.

Kaputnik, Morningsider and Uberuce were the other intrepid travellers.

Tour itself was not unlike other distillery tours, but interesting nonetheless. Two of us came away with bottles, and all of us were stuffed full of food in Gifford.
