Article in The Guardian about how women are now allowed to cycle in Saudi Arabia, if they cycle in parks and accompanied by a male relation.
"the "unnamed official" who made the announcement added that women will be allowed to pedal only around parks and other "recreational areas". They will also have to be dressed in full Islamic body coverings, and – in a darkly comic stipulation that evokes images of tandems – they will have to be accompanied by a male relative. So cycling alone, and indeed towards possible gainful employment, will remain illegal, along with voting, many sports, and a host of other basic activities many would consider a human right.
There are comments below tto the effect that:-
1. Nobody cycles in Saudi Arabia
2. There's nowhere to cycle in Saudi Arabia - it's too hot and the roads are too busy
3. This token cycling is better than nothing. They don't have many facilities for taking exercise.
Cycling was a big part of women's emancipation at the beginning of the 20th century.. Women became mobile and they had to get rid of their constrictive clothing. They could get to jobs and to Suffragette meetings.
