@nelly I was similar, but now find some well fitted narrow SKS chromoplastics very fetching, particularly on more "traditional" looking bikes

What's the view on cycling in these conditions?
My commute is 20 miles in from the west, so the current forecast suggests I'll have a 35mph tail wind. Do I just get on the bike and point east, or do I risk being taken out by crosswind gusts?

Mine is similar (18 miles from west lothian).
35mph tailwind does sound fun, but I think tomorrow will be a day for the car for me :(

from the west, wheeeeeeeeee. from the east, harumph, meh, harumph.
Looks to be down to 16 - 18 mph for evening commute though.
I'll probably bring the car over the bridge and cycle from Queensferry, imagine the bridge will be shut to bikes.

@Baldcyclist If I bike in I'll probably opt for the train back in the evening (the headwind to Edinburgh Park Station will be exercise enough)

I've just got a 4 mile commute, but 60mph gusts sound a bit risky. I think I'll give myself lots of extra time.

No cycle for me today/tomorrow. Being cautious and on the big stable Honda, if it gets *really* bad I may even give up on that, but it'll have to be proper bad for that ;-)

dg145: It's from the far side of Livi. Can do it a bit shorter depending on route but weather and how the legs feel determine which way I go.

If the wind is westerly and you're travelling east or west you're generally fine. It might be a slog going west - I've been blown to a standstill a few times but not blown over.

I'm badly tempted to hit up the prom at Cramond and have a crack at the KOM. Alas, it's also to be uber wet. But then, in the dark and wet there

Coming down the hill on Lasswade Road, I've been blown right across to the other side of the road. I was prob going about 30mph and it was VERY scary.
Went a bit slower after that!

No chance I'm going to be cycling even a short distance in 34mph (plus 60mph gusts) and heavy rain. Even walking will be challenge enough in those conditions...

For those that use the combo of bike and train, I have just had an email from Scotrail.
"Network Rail has advised that a 40 mph speed limit will apply for trains in Scotland tomorrow. This is a precaution by Network Rail Scotland as a result of the severe winds and storms forecast for the morning.
As a result, we will run a reduced number of trains on the most heavily used routes and are working with Network Rail to agree when we can safely resume the normal timetable. This decision will be continually reviewed by the industry as the weather conditions are assessed.
Due to the extent of the restrictions, we are advising customers to consider whether their journey is essential. Full details of which routes are running, and the timetable information, will be on our website shortly."Posted 10 years ago # -
