@IWRATS thanks for the thought, but it looks a little too labour intensive and potentially wet for my liking... I'm hoping that an enterprising narrow boat owner sets up a handy ferry service, even better if it was The Counter.

We need a 'mad ideas for the canal' thread.

Perhaps this section of the canal could be frozen?

Presumably a large collection of construction contractors shouldn't find it too difficult to lay their hands on a couple of a couple of hundred metres' lengths of slightly-flexible plastic pipe of a least 7' diameter with which to make some temporary cycle/pedestrian tunnels, skirting round the closed towpath and sitting in the canal itself - as long as they didn't crack and the ends were kept out of the water they'd be fine; the boat-traffic on the canal isn't really great enough for the reduction in with of the canal by fourteen feet to make much of a difference.

Scottish Canals saying path should reopen tomorrow (Wednesday).

Given the works were to the canal bank, with nothing done to the path, and they'd nocked off by 3pm yesterday, there's no reason why the path couldn't have been reopened during rush hour.

Aye, got caught out on Monday morning trying to head East. As far as I could see there were no signs coming up from Dundee St. I said to the workies they needed signs and they just shrugged.

It was annoying as I was on the trusty cargo bike with my daughter, so had to head back down to Dundee St and then up Yeaman Place and then along Gilmore Place, taking in the wrong way up the one-way-bit-that-should-have-a-bike-contraflow up Merchiston Avenue. I could have gone up Leamington, but didn't fancy 2 right turns across Dundee St.

@harts - rather than going wrong way up Merchiston, I'd recommend turning left and going along either Dorest place or Merchiston Mews. depending on the size of your cargo bike, you could also go all the way through to Horne terrace to Viewforth.

I've seen too many near misses at the junction of Merchsiton Ave to recommend doing anything unorthodox there

I wonder who would be the first to do an Italian-Job style loop the loop inside wingpig's plastic tunnel?

@SRD - cobbles, though. Hence why I go straight up or go to the roundabout. Anyway, won't be an issue for much longer.

Dorset place doesn't have cobbles. and on Merchsiton Mews, the drain down the middle's not bad for cycling, as long as your cargo bike's not a trike.

Ah, sorry, yes, Dorset Place is tarmacadam. Thanks for the tip. Still round the houses, of course. When's that link getting built between canal and the Meadows?! Hankchief was telling me it's planned for FY 17/18.

Thanks - I diverted this morning through Polwarth so it will be nice if it's open again.

Bridge at Viewforth / St Peter's Place - barriers now moved to allow access onto west side of bridge where wider pavement is now taking shape. Not sure how steps are connected on east side.
    Will find out tomorrow.

The steps on the east side were barriered-off late this afternoon.

I swung by on my way home and didn't realise that access was on the other side of the bridge – or maybe I just missed a sign explaining it – so I doubled back and crossed at Leamington.

There are signs up from British Waterways that the canal path will be closed from 21st Nov for 2 weeks. Lift bridge to Bainfield student block.

    Steps are barriered off.

I U-turned and went back over Leamington and up the one way bit. I note that this is used by many cyclists despite the no entry - contraflow would be useful. It's part of the JMW which may (or may not) help.

The path wasn't closed this morning and I didn't see any obvious indications that it is likely to be closed later in the day, unlike the morning of the previous closure.

On my return journey out of town this evening, there was a diversion sign on the towpath pointing down Gibson Terrace. It was angled so that people going in to town could see it.

It was actually in the middle of the path, so I moved it out of the way (but still obvious). Quite a few people looked at me weirdly as I moved it.

The towpath this morning was ice free from slateford station access point right to boroughmuir but quite icy after that. Did not see diversion signs but this is a bit rubbish as the road also has temporary traffic lights at front of boroughmuir.

The path was closed this morning which resulted in my first bicycle to bicyle spot of Lilac Helmet Lady off the canal towpath as I passed her at the temporary roadworks on Fountainbridge.

Both sides of Dundee street pavement are now closed also. The pedestrian diversion cuts through the corner of Fountain Park.

In the time it took me to walk through the road works this morning 5 cyclists overtook me on the pavement, 2 at speed.

    Towpath open this morning.
Still some signs up that say closed, but all barriers gone.
Some cyclists and pedestrians still using diversion as unsure of "openness".

@CJC thanks for the update. A bit of a shame that this didn't come a day sooner given that I was cut up by a taxi driver this morning on my diversionary route :(
