Have we mentioned Myreside Road to Craighouse Road yet? Up by one of the Napier bits.

Yes, I've put it down under Craigshouse Road.

I generally tried to measure whole roads, but for some I just picked the pertinent hilly bit.

  2. Ah yes, I see now. I could have sworn it was steeper than that! Mind you, I've got up that on fixed more than once.

"I could have sworn it was steeper than that!"

Buses can't handle it when it snows...

Anyone know at what point do the powers-at-be decide to stick a gradient sign up? Or is that just done on rural roads?

I'd have thought that a few of these roads warrant a sign, if for no other reason than to give the passing cyclist an added glow of self-satisfaction.

Once we've done the gradient recce we could add them to a suitable web mapping facility? CycleStreets?

"Buses can't handle it when it snows..."

It looks like it has had a lot of grit thrown on it in attempt to keep things open but has eventually been abandoned. The 23 might have made it up with a run up, but when starting from Balcarres Street there would be no hope.

Peggy's Mill Road is steep. The house at the bottom was on my paper round.

    "Peggy's Mill Road is steep"

    YES

Thought that was in list as West Mill Road. Think PMR is steeper.

Wow - people have been giving this a bit of thought.

I'd be well up for having a run at these once the snow clears. Any suggestion for the best route linking Kaputnik's top 12?

Nice thread, though tricky to separate the average and maximum from the available data. Here's a few more suggestions, apologies if they're already covered:

    Drum Brae, from the North?

Torphin Road, up to the old quarry? Outside the bypass, at least for the second part.

Bonaly Road, up as far as the bypass? And then on to Torduff Road up to the reservoir. Again outside the bypass.

It's entirely possible that these two aren't even *that* steep, they just feel that way by the time you've ridden there!

Cramond Glebe Road and School Brae.

    Just my tuppence worth...

Market Street, up to the mound? Would link in nicely with Ramsay Lane.

For that matter, Cockburn Street the wrong way, or is this a strictly legal tour? :-)

How about the NAAFI path from Colinton Mains to Redford? Maybe Spylaw Street is tougher though.

Not Edinburgh but if anyone ever makes it to Port Stanley, try cycling from the seafront up to the main road, I did it recently with friends with the bet being whoever changed into the granny ring bought the beers... didn't have to buy drink but very nearly needed a defibrillator!!

Looking at the top 12, you can make a decent city centre spiral out of Bell's Brae, Glous St, Dublin St, Calton Hill (might as well climb to the Observatory while we're at it), Cranston St, (perhaps throw in Fishmongers Cl, if you're brave enough to risk the Cowgate's broken bottles), Victoria St and Ramsay Lane to finish at the esplanade (by pushing the bikes, if any Historic Scotland staff are reading this ;)).

This could be preceded by Blackford Hill Rise (might as well climb to the Observatory while we're at it), and West Mill Road/Spylaw Bank Road before that.

I don't know the north-south routes in the west at all. Is there a workable/pleasant route between the two Costorphine climbs and West Mill Road?

I'd say that no off-road routes spring to mind. The best way I think would be back streets of south Corstorphine through to Sighthill Industrial Estate, up Bankhead Avenue then straight across the roundabout at the Calder Road and onto the signed "RR" cycle route around town. That means we also get to climb Sighthill Road (in a red-painted lane) - which in itself may only average 3.5%, but it's a mile and 8% in places - and up to Colinton at Gillespie Road (usually get a good breather at the lights at the crossroads at the top)

"Fishmongers Cl" - what am I talking about? %-) That should of course be "Old Fishmarket Close".

Now the weather seems to be improving, I thought I'd give this thread a bump.

Are people still interested in a city hill climbing expedition? Strikes me a Sunday morning may be the best bet for low traffic levels.

Definitely. I reckon Calton Road is impossible on the SS though, the gearing is far too high and because it starts on a hard corner can't get a run up at it :/

...and if you stand up you're taking too much weight off the drive wheel on cobblystreets, though that's not so much a problem when the cobbles aren't covered in icy slush.

Definitely up for this if I can get a weekend morning off.

yes the cobbles don't help either as I found out when I tried... I could gear the bike down though using the inner-ring off the old double crank, that might work. It might make it a bit slow to get inbetween the different hills though!

yeah why not, I dont expect to succeed but I have to get some more hills on my legs,I did manage the Pleasence last night with a full trailer, and everything still works!

My knee is still playing up after doing a couple of laps of Arthur's Seat on my SS two months ago, so I will be doing this fully geared.

@PS - I posted a youtube clip about self knee massage on the "sports massage" thread as I often get same from over-exertion on the SS. I have to say it might look stupid in the clip but it really worked for me. Worth a shot - what's to lose?

Cheers K. I'll have a look and give it a go.

I was kind of hoping that long rides in a low gear would help, as that's what sorted out a long term dodgy knee I had. Problem is, I tend to feel a long ride without a bit of an effort thrown in is a bit of a waste... No self-control.

I'll go back over the list of hills and try and work out a reasonable route between them.

Anyone got any preference for finishing points? Pub / Café?

Iw as going to say "what hills" in relation to Granton, but Laverockback Road would seem to have a short section of 20%
