I use Leith Street daily but only to/from Calton Road entrance to Waverley. I pity the cyclists joining from the very top of the street.

I've yet to see anything to indicate that it's dedicated rather than shared use - like Leith Walk.

Not completely sure I understand you, but they're "dedicated" in the sense that motor vehicles aren't allowed in them. I'm not aware of anywhere where cycling is legal but walking isn't (and would argue that there shouldn't be).
@Frenchy The Leith Walk cycle lanes are shared use and are signposted as https://cdn.road.cc/sites/default/files/styles/main_width/public/images/News/Shared%20path%20sign%20600%20x%20600.jpg?itok=AWaxvBJ5, whereas the west to east path on the meadows is a segregated cycle lane, signposted as http://www.cycling-edinburgh.org.uk/pix/shared-use-sign.jpg.
I queried the shared use markings on the Leith Walk cycle lanes and was e-mailed the following:
"The signs installed on the cycle lane on the footway at Leith walk are to remind cyclists that the cycle lane is a shared area i.e. cyclists AND pedestrians are allowed in this area (as opposed to a segregated cycle only lane)"
Pedestrians are, of course, allowed in the cycle lanes at the Meadows. Which just makes the justification for the signage at Leith Walk confusing.
True, though they're not encouraged to, unlike a completely shared use path (I'm crap with terminology, sorry :))

I rode down Leith St this afternoon, just to check it out. On the road until Calton Rd, then crossing on to the path. The obvious problem is that there are so many pedestrians that they spill out all over the cycle path. Whether it's officially open or closed won't change this. It'll be an area of conflict. Especially as at the bottom end it's at the same level as the pavement, so no reason for peds to really be aware of it at all.
I went up it yesterday, just to see what was going in. It looked like it was still closed from beneath the roundabout, as it's still a conefest with queued traffic, except that some of the traffic was buses. It was quite clear once I got beyond the cone-channels, but then had to pull into the side at Greenside to let an ambulance through.
It's still very narrow in the left lane at the top when there are buses prevented from turning right in the right-hand lane.

You mean buses that have come up the left lane and want to go to Princes Street?
They might have come up the left lane, but they've moved over to the right, but can then get no further due to a continuous string of buses, coaches and taxis going past the Balmoral, partly fed by the procession of coaches from the giant tour bus stop Waterloo Place has become.

At the CEC meeting about Roseburn kerbs last week, the RNIB & Guide Dogs reps were very clear that their members needed a 50mm height differential between cycleway and footway to be able to distinquish betwwen them.
The Access Panel people had a preference for it to be flat, but agreed to 50mm as they were used to dealing with awkward layouts. Tescos weren't keen as they manoeuvre trolleys, so a localised solution was being considered.
50mm is the default option in Cycling by design, so not sure why CEC have gone with flat here - perhaps acknowledgement that the footway isn't wide enough or in an attempt to slow downhill cyclists...
CEC have two islands with bike lanes at opposite ends of the Meadows.
Argyle place has generally better compliance with kerbs and people walking on the pavement.
Forrest Road island is flat and people walk and cycle where they can. Cycleway is coloured too....
Edinburgh has plenty of examples to observe what happens with 'non motorised traffic flow' when small changes occur in how a path is delineated. Visitors remark on how we manage to have good and bad design together. I do point out that we never rush anything here and the city is now just one 'shared use' conflict zone. Add in the festival and you can't see your feet let alone bike lane markings.
Once the festival gets going in earnest, it would be good to get some video footage of the pedestrian shambles at that pavement pinch point...
Went Southbound up Leith Street this morning. Was okay as not busy and no parking, but the traffic lanes are very tight, no space to filter and get into the cycle box if you needed to.
Also first time up the new layout and first illegal left turn spotted.

Yep I stayed where I took the photo. I might have tried filtering if that car wasn’t in box.

Never used to be that much traffic turning left here, but I don’t suppose many drivers will notice (or perhaps care about) that sign.
Presume some carriageway markings, but not visible!
Don’t know what drivers are supposed to do if really want to go along Waterloo Place.
Edit - actually looking at top photo again don’t think there are markings (eg ahead only).
Perhaps there was a slight desperation to fulfil the bare minimum "Leith Street open to motor traffic before the festival[s, excluding Film/Art/Jazz/Blues]" without yet completing all signage or reversing any of the Easter Road/Abbeymount/Cadzow Place/Montrose Terrace enclockwisification?

A coach driver did not appear to be aware of any left-turn restrictions. Fortunately, traffic behind it would have been unable to go anywhere else anyway, as the rest of the junction was clogged.
I'm really "looking forward" to experiencing this for myself in an hour or so...
