Bob Last! He brings impeccable Edinburgh film business credentials to this new studio. Should be A Good Thing for Leith.

Bob Last has produced some good films like Sunset Song and The House of Mirth. This sounds like really good news for Leith and the city generally.
The Illusionist is a gorgeous animation.

Sounds good. Sylvain Chomet of Illusionist fame quit Edinburgh under a bit of a cloud if I remember correctly. Wanted to set up an animation 'centre of excellence' but British art graduates couldn't draw well enough and nobody would fund it?

New Zealand used to have very little film industry. If you had ambitions to be an animator or special effects person you had to leave the country and work in the USA or the UK or wherever. Now Peter Jackson has set up the Weta studios those young creatives stay. And no doubt attract international talent.
It's not so drastic in Scotland where there's a good games industry in Dundee which presumably uses the same kind of skills as film animation, and of course Scottish talents didn't have to move as far as New Zealanders. Still, it is great that graduates from the Art Colleges can find work locally - and of course this will attract talents from other places.

The TV show, which is based off of Neil Gaiman’s 2005 fantasy novel of the same name, is filming at FirstStage Studios in Leith.

Plans for the £25 million studio were approved at the council’s Development Management Committee today (July 6).
Councillors granted permission for the building of 11,148 sqm of business, general industry and storage and distribution which will be used for film, studio, and stage developments.
“
Is this a case of ‘every council must have one’ or a sign of growing interest in/demand for filming in Scotland?

Or is this the same folk who wanted to build one at Dalkeith?

A friend who is involved in the film industry told me that there is a growth of the industry in Scotland, and that Creative Scotland has been intelligently supportive.
