@MURUN, no footway on kirkgait, just road a big black road now with lots of chippings. As with several of these slurry seals, actual surface was not too bad before.

Have you seen any slurry seal near you?

@gembo, indeed, was the top part not retarmaced at least in part a couple of years ago? And the bottom part needed proper relaying, not more superficiality. Is slurry seal what used to be called 'surface dressing' or different?
Not usually a subscriber to brown envelope theories of contract procurement but sometimes you have to wonder

Having recently got interested in this, I think there are two different surfaces here.
Slurry seal is poured on and brushed out: it's a mixture of sand and tar and some other binders. I think it's used mainly for low-traffic areas like footpaths and car parks. We don't like this on bike paths because, when badly applied, it's bumpy and grippy.
Chip seal is what they do on roads where they spray a film of tar and then spread and roll a layer of chippings into the top. I think. We don't like this because it leaves gravel everywhere, particularly on corners, and we fall off.

Quite a lot of slurry chip on glenburn road if you are heading to the free company of balerno over the Xmas period, now totally non free
