My view remains 'more = better' (when it comes to bike shops).

BUT for them all to survive/thrive they need customers - more people to buy more stuff.

Whether that 'works' depends on lots of things -

state of the economy - whether people have money to spend on stuff and/or 'downsizing' from car to bike.

how much Edinburgh becomes the 'world class cycling city' (as 'promised').

how other shops 'react' to Evans.

Evans isn't just another bike shop it's a brand - better than Halfords and a lot bigger than EBC.

Of course Evans will be competing with all the other shops and they with Evans - mostly by being different in the way Edinburgh bike shops already are.

Bike shops (wherever) are people businesses. In the past they were (sometimes) run by grumpy men in brown overalls or ex-racers who didn't seem to like non-racers as customers.

Now (the good ones) work hard at customer relations. Of course there will always be people who prefer the anonymity of Halfords or 'favour' no particular shop.

In the bigger scheme of things bike shops aren't competing against each other. They compete with other shops that sell shiny stuff. They compete with an overwhelmingly car-centric world, even in Edinburgh...

I hope Evans sell lots of bikes - especially to people who didn't previously have one, and so add to the number of people cycling in Edinburgh, which must be a good thing.

  2. From a selfish, personal point of view, it gives me a bike shop within seconds of my work's front door that isn't MacDonalds, so popping out for an inner tube, or new pads and the like is easier. Also good for looking at shiny stuff before going to buy it at TBC ;)

If Evans are based on Lothian Road, it will be quite interesting as they'll become the most visible bike shop in the city. People on buses or cars passing by will see the shop as they do the big brands on Princes St.

Hard to say who the losers will be from this competition. I'd expect EBC to be affected as they are currently the only Specialized dealer in Edinburgh, the arrival of Evans will change that. MacDonalds might suffer due to proximity, but will surely keep their loyal racers. Bike Trax might lose custom as their lineup of products will be too similar to one part of the Evans offering. A few potential Halfords customers may be tempted by Evans, though as Halfords operate in the out of town segment it's a different catchment: mainly motorists who are also cyclists, who mainly arrive by car. Try finding the cycle parking outside Halfords if you don't believe me.

Yes, though I suspect "Lothian Road" is generic for the area, though the person who told the person who told me seemed to think it really was ON LR.

But (as above) seems to be work going on at the site that was 'suspected' earlier in the year.

Hmm.. my view is mixed, from previous expereince.

Lothian road is very close to the other local small business bike shops nearby and will have an impact on those businesses.

But, when I bought my last bike new from a LBS in East Anglia last April, I found the owner had substituted components from less high spec ones. I didn't notice at first but when my bike was stolen my insurance paid for an identical bike which came from Evans. I first noticed when I saw the tyres were Specialized instead of those on the original bike Nutrak. Also the hubs and wheel rims were different. I didn't make a note of the gears. In this point Evans were better as they bought the bike from Specialzed and built it as is instead of substituting different components on the bike I was initially provided.

One thing i don't see from the picture of the Exchange building - if that is ther final location, there is very little public ground space outside all new buildings and no space for cycle parking. One example is here, there the old post office used to be at the junction od Lady Lawson st and West Port. When the old concertite post office was there there was a huge public space between the building and the path. Looking now the building uses up every but of space and the building is left imposing its self over the junction as dose the one other side of Lady lawson Street.

There are six or seven racks directly to the north of EP1, on which I've only ever seen two bikes, bunched up cosily on the same side of the same rack at the end nearest what is now a café. More racks behind Loudons and more in the pedestrianish space in the bit between Semple Street/Grove Street parallel to Fountainbridge, all behind EP1 rather than in front of it (and slightly riskily not-in-plain-view, though presumably people in the surrounding offices would alert the polices if they saw a gang of thieves a-thieving). In front of it the narrowish rack-less pavement is enhanced by a slippy metal bit.

Oh, that's good. My office's bike to work scheme is run through Evans and I've not taken it up because there wasn't a local shop. I think my next chance to join it will be October so the timing's pretty good.

All or some of this then(?)

Well it's sort of Lothian Road...

Probably all of that given the way the building management have been talking. They've started digging up the lane behind that for loading. On a selfish note I hope they don't have many staff that ride to work, the bike rack i use probably more rightly belongs to EP1 than my office.

There lloks to be plenty of space for more racks outside the front (in the picture above), Perhaps you could email Evans and ask if they will place bike racks out front to encourage people to cycle there and then park outside (on the racks) whist they shop?

    "Dear Evans,

I see you are opening a new shop in Edinburgh, At last !!!! Could you fund sheffeild stands outside the new shop please? I used to live in Nottingham but always found it difficult to find somewhere to secure my bike to when I was shopping for clothes, innertubes etc... The pavement outside your new shop is plenty wide enough and not on the main route up Lothian road so should not impeed pedestrians, if you placed a dozed stands. Most other cycle shops in Edinburgh have some kind of cycle stands outside, and if I can't secure my bike I'm less likely to pop in to se whats on offer.

    Kindest regards,

    Dave Crampton"

They took out a line of trees I think they are making that wider so that a truck can park and still let things through.

Mmm, so they'd planned to let shops without delivery access??

They could just do what all the metro/express/"local" mini-supermarkets do and park their articulated lorries on the road, right infront.

Yeah, block the cycle lane while loading too, why not? Oh, hold on, this is a bike shop...

I don't think they built these as shops they were all meant to be offices but I think they've struggled to fill the 3 buildings.

I wonder if this sort of development also contributes to the Council's budget decisions?

"I wonder if this sort of development also contributes to the Council's budget decisions?"

I think you are being optimistic about holistic approaches!

It's possible that someone has said/written that the growing number of bike shops is an indication of more interest/cycling, but observations/surveys on the streets would be better evidence.

As we have discussed, the arrival of Evans could have a detrimental effect on individual shops, but the fact of this new shop/brand - and the publicity/promotion surrounding its arrival - will attract more people to riding around Edinburgh.

Interesting bit of gossip over heard whilst getting screwdriver from Murrays tools. The chap in front of me was one of the guys from McDonald Cycles, he was saying Evans is having some difficulties because the door they wanted to use is designated a fire exit.

Pays to shop local I guess.

I see Evans are NOT using local contractors. All the names mentioned on the A4 sheet are in England, the bottom 2 are from nr London.

Back to the drawing board, I suppose!

@DaveC, the principal contractor might be sub-contracting though to local tradesmen: joiners, shop fitters, etc.
