I don't see how the community council woman could possibly come up with 'half the park' - if you consider both west and east together, the proposed allotments are _at most_ maybe 1/3 of half of the overall space - so maybe 1/6th? (and probably more like 1/8th). and i've never seen any one using that part of the park.

(yes, i know, i should put this on the EEN comments...)

Merchiston Community Council AGM tomorrow @7pm, Eric Liddell centre. I know at least three of us live in their area, and probably more...(here's their boundaries ironically, HP East is not even shown as 'greenspace' on this map!)

"EVERY home in central Scotland will be within 1,000 feet of a park or woodland and land used for allotments will rise threefold, under a new vision for the region in 2030"

It says ©2004. Were the railway sidings at the end of Maxwell St there as recently as that?

2004 will be when the Community Council boundary was added.

It would seem the base map was used for all CC boundaries (I've looked at a few CC web sites). This might have been a good idea when CCs were first instituted, but CEC really should use a more up to date map - at least whenever there are new elections!

    @SRD -
"if you consider both west and east together,"
They're not, there is a road between them - creates a mental block.
"i've never seen any one using that part of the park."
I have seen the Kuk Sool Won martial arts crowd from the Merchiston boys club use it at least three times a week.
We were recently playing on it as were a young couple practising softball, we use it often for disposable bbqs as they can be sat on the tarmac up by the canal to not burn the grass. I think it would be good to see some proper bookable park bbqs set up and some raised platforms for people to use disposables rather than leaving a join the dots burned rectangles of grass.
When the football is on in the two pitches on other other side of the hedge it can fill up quickly.
I am all in favour of the Shandon Local Food Group but as comments say there is a 10 year waiting list for allotments, it would not be fair to people who have been waiting for years to exercise their green fingers while it would be a shame for them not to work out for the local area.
7pm a Eric Liddell you say? Is that tonight? See you there ;)

No he means the ones in Morningside that were built on years ago.

Spytfyre - thanks for that. Various other folk have said to me that they've never seen anyone using it either, but very useful to know who _does_ use it. I've always seen barbecues on the other side of the hedge. But, have thought it would be a good place for martial arts.

I think a proper barbecue place would be an absolutely brilliant idea. That would definitely be the norm in any North American or African park -- barbecue stands, picnic tables, and a water tap or two -- but UK provision always seems much more DIY.

SRD - it depends on where you go, Beecraigs Country Park between Linlithgow and Bathgate for example has some cracking BBQ stands you can book for events.
I guess the council are just worried about vandalism and who can blame them

Yes, but she prefaced it by saying 'its the only park we have'. so, either, she thinks it is one park, and the proposed allotments are about 1/8-1/6th of it, OR, there are two parks, and the proposed allotments are about 1/4 of ONE of them.
