    It takes GPS location, output from the power meter on the crank for some of the cyclists in the tour and plots it in nearish realtime on a google map, plus showing the gradient of the current section. So that you can get a sense of how hard the cyclists are working for any given section.

I don't say there are too many cars in the racebut you need to know when to pass. A lot of drivers don't understand racing. On small roads like that that car could have waited before going past."

    So its not just us mortals on real roads who get that feeling....

    And that's in France where (probably) the TdF has helped to make motorists more 'cycle aware'.

    Actually, I think commentary is available on the BBC Sport website, but not on any broadcast channels.

    I know I could just watch ITV4, but I quite like radio as a medium and it's less data across the tubes.

    I'm in the WinPho minority and it doesn't seem to like tvcatchup at all, my office building seems to be a thoroughly effective shield to 3G connections too, and GPRS ain't so good with video :)

    Actually, may try the pacific rim stations, as there's b*ugger all else to talk about at that time in the morning :)

    ..and they are in english-ish :)

    The tactical guide is helpful for the previously disinterested, such as myself. Now I know I need a team to assist my progress into the wind along the canal in the morning.

    I really felt for Vanderdert on Saturday when he fell off twice when descending, especially the front wheel slip on melted tarmac (like diesel?). Unlike me though he kept on going without getting the jitters.

    I do find myself drawn in to the ITV coverage although the ads are very, very irritating and you only get 45 mins of cycling in the hour I reckon.

    The TdF just shows you what can be done if you modify human beings enough.... ;-)

    Yesterday Chris Boardman demonstrated the effect a headwind has on you and how drafting saves a lot of effort. This almost always shown when the peleton bears down on the heroic breakaway rider...

    He said it was as much as 80% extra effort required above 20 mph. Think that's right.

    Aerodynamics are key to using less energy on all vehicles. Human powered machines are no different yet most people believe aerodynamics only work on windy days on the level.

    Good idea, LaidBack. Time for a new experience. Maybe a recumbent fits the bike racks on Scotrail trains better than my upright (or maybe not?).

    2 wheeled recumbents fit. Depends which model of course as to whether they fit better than a standard bike. I take mine on trains quite a lot and never had a problem. Mind you in the rush hour space is tight and some cyclists leave panniers on which can make things tricky.

    The Helios tandem is a bit longer than a most recumbents and a named 'prohibited' item although it can be compacted a bit. In real terms all the railway care about is that doors and corridors are clear.

    I once took a Mistral recumbent on a packed commuter train in Birmingham. I just wheeled it upright onto it's back wheel and it took the same space as a standing person in the vestibule. Think the fact the pedals were above head height was useful. Plus the fact the guard couldn't get near me.
