I had a new chain put on my Alfine-hubbed commuter bike at the start of February. I've cleaned it with baby-wipes and oiled it regularly and it looks like new. According to Strava it's done 402 miles since then 80% of that on the towpath, where there's been little salt.

I've just been out with the chain wear tool, and it says that chain is more than 1% worn. In other words, it says it's time to replace it.

So, do you think that's reasonable? I know chains are consumable, but this one really doesn't seem to have lasted...

It should last much longer than that. Would excess tension cause this perhaps? Chain too tight? My Alfine has lasted at least 6 months and it gets dog's abuse.

Mine vary a lot depending on where and when they are used. Salt and grit can have them worn out in 4-500 miles.

how are your cogs? If they're worn, they will wear the chain out faster.

EDIT just seen it's a hub gear. But presumably the internal gubbins will have sprockets or cogs or whatever inside as well
