Just been approached by the people who organise the Moonwalk. They are looking for cycle-based volunteers to support their event in June.

    Here's what they say:

    8th – 9th June
    Location: Leith Links
Want some unique volunteering events experience?
The opportunity to use your skills & enthusiasm as a cyclist?
Have an amazing weekend meeting friendly new people?
We need an army of volunteers at the Moonwalk Edinburgh Scotland to support over 10,000 Walkers taking part in one of our unique events. In addition to our Full & Half marathons, we now have two new challenges Over the Moon & The New Moon, which walkers do in their fantastically decorated bras! To find out more about the event go to: http://www.walkthewalk.org/Challenges/TheMoonWalkEdinburgh
Help us promote breast cancer awareness by donating your time & skills to help raise money for Walk the Walk, a grant making charity.
    • An upbeat, fun & challenging event.
    • Provide our walkers with some extra special support by cycling the route to cheer them on and help them reach their goal!
    • Be part of the original and only “MoonWalk” event.
    • Put some excellent volunteering experience under your hat!

We would love you to join us on the Cycling Team to help support our walkers and our on foot route marshals. All you need is your own bike, safety equipment, big smile and lots of energy! You must be over 18 years old for this job role.

Volunteers are an essential part of the Walk the Walk team and without them the MoonWalks simply could not happen. Donate your time to a charitable cause, meet some fabulous people and have an amazing weekend while helping raise millions of pounds for vital breast cancer causes.

What is their definition of "safety equipment"?

  3. Organised event, insurance requirement, you'll be asked to wear hi-viz and a helmet.

I've asked the people at Moonwalk who sent me the stuff. They said:
"This basically means a helmet, lights & lock(if you have one). Sorry it wasn’t more clear.

If any cyclists wish to use reflective gear then that’s great, also panniers can be useful too but by no means essential!"

I've gone back to clarify which bits of these are 'mandatory' (yes, we all know which bit in particular I'm referring to), and await a reply.

Did you ask which safety gear is mandatory for the runners?

Before then at another organised event: "Cycle safety helmets are recommended but not compulsory" - http://sestran-megacycle.co.uk/terms.php
(20 mile round trip from Penicuik, 5/5/13, £10)

Well the reply came back as:
'it’s just what we ‘advise’ but of course as you pointed out, helmets are (not a legal requirement) and so not required should the cyclist not have one or decide not to wear one.'

So if you don't own a helmet or don't want to wear one you can still volunteer. It sounds like it might be quite fun: does anyone here have any experience of it?

Done similar events from an ambulance cover perspective a few times. Generally good fun and full of lots of happy people doing stuff for good causes.

I'm intrigued as to what the role of the cyclists actually is. Cycling up and down cheering people on?

I've intended helping out the last 3 or 4 years but it's always clashed with when I've been out of town. As I understand it, cyclists are mobile marshals, so yes, they cheer on the walkers (not runners) but will also be on hand to do other tasks such as helping to resupply water stations or perhaps assist/look after anyone in difficulty until qualified help arrives. You are assigned to a specific area of the course (and can ask for an area that suits you where available).

My sister has come through from the west coast do do the walk a couple of times and I've met her on course (before I'd heard of cycle marshals being wanted). The atmosphere is fun, regardless of the weather.

As I'm a night owl, the times which they struggle most to get volunteers for actually appeal most to me.

I'm sure there was more cycle-specific info in previous years, but some volunteer information can be found HERE.

I was on one of the cycle teams on Saturday night. Despite glorious weather during the day, during the evening it deteriorated somewhat, colder and overcast with a few light showers, though nothing serious. We patrolled the shore from Silverknowes east as it's dark at that time with no lighting, I guess having mobile mobile lighted marshals helps with safety and encouragement. Then later from Constitution St to Portobello Prom, by which time the sun was coming up and the weather drastically improved:

Great atmosphere, and actually good fun. Keeping going on the bike kept the tiredness away! Will definitely volunteer next year.

    "
It is understood the delays were linked to senior officials in the parks department who postponed approving the event because the preferred location, Inverleith Park, was deemed unsuitable for use.
