06:20AM this morning, cyclist and black ford focus. Focus was stopped in the middle of the roundabout. Cyclist was up and talking to driver as I passed, police car arrived just behind me. Driver heading east into the rising sun. Looked like cyclist was OK but bike was lying flat on the ground.

Oooft. Glad the cyclist was up and about. The low sun is always troublesome.

Sounds like a could-be-much-worse situation. Everyone's favourite roundabout.

Hope the cyclist was unhurt, and the person at fault is agreeing to pay damages.
I avoid that roundabout like the plague! I considered riding along Ferry road earlier this week but as I approached the Red bridge I saw traffic backing up to the red bridge and thought better of it. Isn't that the place which frightens L Hinds the most about cycling? And if so why doesn't she make it a priority of hers to get a safer design put in place there?

I'm also glad it wasn't a lot worse.
But it's not only Crewe Toll - Ferry Road also gives me the willies. That stretch from Morrisons to Crewe Toll has (faded) cycle lanes painted on, but it also has frequent bus stops, and the buses just drive right along the cycle lane, no attempt to pull out of it.It's time for Edinburgh to take a bold leap forward into the 1980s and safely separate the cycle lanes from the bus stops. It's absurd and dangerous to have them occupy the same space on the road.

That section from Crewe Toll down towards Granton Road can be a bit hairy.
On the one hand, it can be very satisfying to cycle down there as you're often riding up the sdde of slwo moving or stationary traffic; however, on the other hand that brings attendant risks:
I had a proper SMIDSY there where a driver coming out of the houses to the left was waved across traffic by a driver stationary in the queue. He pulled out right in front of me while I was doing 15mph up the cycle lane. A skid, sideways-on turn and hand slammed into his side window to keep myself upright gave the first driver and his passenger something of a shock...

As I work at Selex which is right on the Crewe Toll roundabout I can't really avoid it. I've had more trouble at the mini roundabout at the foot of Orchard Brae leading onto Crewe Road south, been clipped twice here.

Ah the wave-across-without-looking. I had one of those this morning - spidey sense had tingled that it was going to happen, so I was already slowing to a halt as the unseen car on the left pulled out, so there was a good opportunity to vent my frustration at the light-flasher rather than the flashee.

Officer injured cycling to work yesterday. Please always lookout for cyclists on roundabouts.
Driver advice."

Not that I'd wish a cycling officer knocked down any more than another cyclist, but perhaps a small blessing in disguise to keep the police on the prowl for bad and inconsiderate drivers.
Hope the injuries aren't serious and the driver (if in the wrong as it would sound) has the book thrown at them even though it will probably only be the size of a pamphlet as usual.

Looking at that driver advice, whilst it's unfortunately and accurate photo, I wish they hadn't used an image where the front cyclist is clearly way over the ASL's second line. It doesn't create the right image, especially to the countless motorists who seem to think as long as they themselves are behind a stop line it doesn't matter how much of the rest of their vehicle in front of them is over it!

"motorists who seem to think as long as they themselves are behind a stop line it doesn't matter how much of the rest of their vehicle in front of them is over it!"

Exactly! And he's not even managed to get his body behind the line. I suppose we should feel sorry for the poor wee BMW driver, he is obviously so bored he forgot the rules!
