The death toll among London cyclists came to 28 in the past four years with the death of polar scientist Dr Katharine Giles in a collision with a lorry this month. Cycling safety, then, deserves urgent action, and that is what police are doing with their latest initiative today, a crackdown on rogue drivers and unsafe heavy goods vehicles. There will be stop-and-search patrols to check licences and inspect construction site vehicles for safety defects, and checkpoints in strategic areas. At present there are few pre-emptive checks on vehicles and the initiative will help establish a database to tackle unsafe drivers and rogue haulage firms.
