A good article concerning this development...

Please write to object to the planning application, if you agree we could have a much better 'missing cycle link' built here.
CityCyclingEdinburgh was launched on the 27th of October 2009 as "an experiment".
IT’S TRUE!
CCE is 16years old!
Well done to ALL posters
It soon became useful and entertaining. There are regular posters, people who add useful info occasionally and plenty more who drop by to watch. That's fine. If you want to add news/comments it's easy to register and become a member.
RULES No personal insults. No swearing.

Done!
It's frustrating down there because the developments that DID go in have got shared use paths and cycle signs and everything, then big barriers shutting off roads that abruptly end - you can see exactly where the cycle path was going to go, and how much nicer it is than the road there, and can't help but think.... Plllllleeeeeease, just finish it! (which this gives us an opportunity to actually say!)
Done also. Forth Ports should not be allowed to get away with plonking a big section of cheap, sub-standard cycle "infrastructure" in order to maximise their own gains out of this land.
I noted the fact that they are planning 8 roads intersecting the E-W cycle "route", in a matter of a few hundred metres and all that stop-start with priority to motor vehicles is not conducive to the sort of infrastructure we should expect from a development straddling a key cycle (and walking) corridor.
Wouldn't it be awesome if they gave bikes and pedestrians priority at all those junctions? It would slow the cars right down, and make it much more enjoyable environment to live in. /<Dream>
That link goes to an article about pictures of flowers?
@fimm. how odd. i will tweet them and see if they've taken it down. here is info from spokes:
C. PLANNING ISSUE 1: GRANTON HARBOUR [by 3 May]
Plans by Forth Ports for 1700 homes, a hotel, businesses, etc say they cater for cycle use, but in reality seem set to be a disaster, including sections of shared-use pavement and with stops at side roads every 100m or so! The opportunity to properly link up an east-west coastal route is also being squandered. The cycling issues are well covered in articles by the Innertube Map and by Greener Leith...

Unfortunately much of what is already there is a bit rubbish.
No dropped kerb by ccbb7766, on Flickr
have you sent that to the Guardian infra thing?
do we need a 'dropped kerb' patrol?
do we need a 'dropped kerb' patrol?
I rather suspect we need an 'everything, everywhere, in Edinburgh' patrol. I someone in a wheelchair yesterday nearly have an accident at a ped crossing whose kerb was "lowered" in the loosest possible sense.
Here's an updated link:
(the previous link was not permanent)
Thank you.
I'm pretty sure this relates to cb's undropped kerb above:
Blocked Pavement @BlockedPavement
Edinburgh Council persuaded to ask developer to put in dropped kerb having initially said they couldn't check it until road adopted
Well done Edinburgh council!

I haven't yet checked to see if the new plans are any better for cycling
@kaputnik that map is private on Flikr so I can't see the whole thing...
If you right click you can "view image" on the whole screen.
The plan discussed above has now been withdrawn.
Oh good. I got an email when I was on holiday saying that they (planning) had recommended to councillors that it be declined. From my reading of the note, one of the reasons cited was inadequacy of the street layout for cycling.
APPROVAL OF MATTERS SPECIFIED IN CONDITION 2 OF OUTLINE APPLICATION 01/00802/OUT COVERING SITING AND HEIGHT OF DEVELOPMENT, DESIGN AND CONFIGURATION OF PUBLIC AND OPEN SPACES, ACCESS, ROAD LAYOUTS, FOOTPATHS AND CYCLE ROUTES. at 65 WEST HARBOUR ROAD EDINBURGH EH5 1PW
REFERENCE NUMBER: 13/04320/AMC (SCHEME: )
The City of Edinburgh Council has determined the application as follows:
Decision: APPROVED
Conditions:-
6. The proposed 4 metre wide cycle track for shared cycle/pedestrian use on West Harbour Road/Lower Granton Road shall be designed to give priority to the cyclists and pedestrians using this facility over the side road traffic. It shall also allow for suitable connections to the promenade at the east and west of the site. The detailed design shall be first submitted to and agreed in writing by the Head of Plannning and Building Standards
edd1e_h:
Note: I've only copied condition 6 to keep the post short. Good result, but the devil is in the detail...
So that's good, right? I didn't give a stuff about the development itself, after all why not build houses on industrial brownfield sites as they are clearly needed. I just strongly objected to the unnecessary perforation of a key cycling route to give far more vehicular access than is required to the development.
Latest application 14/05305/AMC approved.
Conditions 6 & 7:
6. Details of a suitable Waterfront cycle/ pedestrian route shall be submitted to and approved by the Head of Planning and Transport and shall give priority to the cyclists and pedestrians using this facility over side road traffic. The details shall include details of the connections to the promenade at the east and west sides of the site. The approved route shall be implemented as agreed by the Head of Planning and Transport.
7. The detailed design of a 5 metre wide cycle track for shared cycle/pedestrian use on West Harbour Road/Lower Granton Road shall be submitted to and agreed in writing by the Head of Planning and Transport. It shall be designed to give priority to the cyclists and pedestrians using this facility over the side road traffic. It shall also allow for suitable connections to the promenade at the east and west of the site.
So the cycle track is now 5 metres wide, with priority - good news
Note that, according to the master plan drawings, the development will be in three phases:
Phase 1 is the 'marina' area in the north and associated facilities (Retail? Housing?). Years 1-5.
Phase 2 is the belt south of that, clearly mostly housing. Years 5-10.
Phase 3 is the belt south of Phase 2, adjoining Granton Road etc. Years 10-15.
So, we might get a path along the waterfront to the 'marina' as part of Phase 1, i.e.. in the next five years. Or we might not, it's unclear.
Unlikely to get the 5 metre path along Granton Road etc. for another ten to fifteen years, unless it's a case of building roads and pavement access first, housing later. Latter seems a bit unlikely...
So I can look forward to cycling this last path in my retirement then. :-)
