    "

Forty years ago Copenhagen was just as car-clogged as anywhere else, but now 36% of the population arriving at work or education do so on bicycles, from all over the Metro area.

I might come along, just to see if he's any less condescending in person than he seems to be on-line.

I'm sure it will be quite interesting. Given that I've attended talks by Jan Gehl and David Sim (Jan's right hand man, originally from Linlithgow) in the last year I probably won't bother.

Jan Gehl is one of the guys who can lay some claim to reshaping Copenhagen, including the cycle infrastructure. I heartily recommend his books to anyone with an interest in urban design/planning, particularly "Life between buildings" - published in 1971 and still relevant today.

Should be a great talk and definitely worth going to hear.

    Okay, I'll bite.

"I have been proud of the messenger community for its part in helping, in some small way, to repopularise cycling, by showing that it is a practical, economical alternative to motor transport. I also like to think that bicycle messengers have had some impact in other, less tangible ways on cycle culture." Buffalo Bill

"In order to encourage more people to ride it is essential to make it look easy. You don't need lycra. You don't need fancy shoes, shorts, bikes. You only need two hands, two feet and two wheels." Mikael Colville-Andersen

    They can't both be right.

    "They can't both be right."

They can - appealing to different demographics.

Any increases in cycling (all/any type) will encourage others.

    Sometimes it's seeing PLM sometimes P(a bit)LM.

Today I was out with my son on the lymphoy, blinkbonny woodhall road, juni green, Balerno loop. Even better than normal as the road into blinkbonny from the west is closed to traffic (kind of). I was on my sturmey three spd and my son had his halfords mountainish bike. I had my hovis bunnet, Aldi 2.99 persimmon specs, protective rain jacket and jeans. Son had helmet and hoodie, his rain jacket in my pannier. Eclectic? The WoL path drying out again and churned up slightly by currie riding of the march horses hooves from earlier in the day

If you put 'spokes' in at the checkout, you can get in for £10.

Actually you can get away without the former two in one combination or another.

I have a neighbour who only has the two wheels, but who manages just fine!

If it wasn't for Copenhagen Cycle Chic (or the even less politically correct 'Copenhagen girls on bikes' as it was then) I'd probably still think that as long as everyone took the lane and kept their wits about them and we (somehow) encouraged enough bikes to generate safety in numbers, then all would be fine. It was the sight of two women in black cycling side by side at night that made me realise there was more to safety in cycling than having a hi vis vest and the reflexes of a ninja. Via there I found A View From the Cycle Path and the rest is history. While I now find CCC a bit much, and I find him a bit too prone to pick a fight with his allies instead of his opponents, I'm still grateful for having my eyes opened.
