"“We have an ambitious vision to promote cycling but there is no need to re-invent the wheel and I am keen that we learn from the experiences of our neighbours”, Brown told Scotland on Sunday."

I am amused to see this Sarah McIntosh person wheeling out the "not enough space" excuse, and Jim Orr pretending Edinburgh has an 8% modal share when it has nothing of the kind. Same old, same old. I'm sure him and Keith will enjoy their junket to the Netherlands and learn precisely nothing.

Let me just turn on that civil servantese translator:

"I am very much looking forward to finding out about the different approaches taken in the Netherlands regarding cycling infrastructure and other softer measures."

Translation: "I want it to seem like I am doing something about cycling - visiting The Netherlands is something."

"I am supportive of any improvements that Scottish planning authorities and local roads authorities can implement to make our roads a safer place to cycle.”

Translation: "Cycling? Nothing to do with me guv"

Well, I'm delighted that he's going to the right place to see what can actually be done with a bit of political will. Obviously the political will isn't forthcoming at the moment so will have to be supplied externally, hopefully via thousands of voters showing up at POP...

A bit of judicious letter writing probably wouldn't go amiss either
