Salary: Circa £40k plus Pension and Benefits Package

It is an exciting time to be part of Scottish Cycling, the National Governing Body for cycling in Scotland. Continued success at the highest level is inspiring a boom in participation across the nation and resulting in an unprecedented membership increase of 109% since 2009. Our new home at the Sir Chris Hoy velodrome and the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow present huge opportunities for our sport to continue our growth journey and deliver a lasting legacy from playground to podium as we plan to 2018 and beyond.

I hope they really mean the "playground" bit - and are interested in developing the full range of bicycle using sports - not just track and road.

Also have an interest beyond 'finding the next Hoy/Wiggins'.

Scottish Cycling: "the National Governing Body for cycling in Scotland"

Cycling Scotland: "the national cycle promotion organisation for Scotland"

    anyone else confused?

That said, Scottish cycling has just sent out pro-Pedal on Parliament & pro-petition tweets, which is more than Cycling Scotland has done (to my knowledge, please let me know if i'm wrong).

Cycling Scotland is a quango, state funded. Scottish Cycling is a sporting association/governing body, funded by membership fees, sports lottery cash, private sponsors (eg. Sky?).

    Quite different beasts.

    "Quite different beasts"

'We' might know that, but 9z% of people won't.

I've never been one of the people who says 'cycle organisations should merge/work together more closely so that there is "one voice" for cycling', but if that is the SC strap line it really should include the word sport.

Goes right to the heart of the slightly scizophrenic self-identity of cycling.

For sports cyclists, their sport is cycling. Cyclists are sportsmen/women, mainly amateur with a tiny professional elite.

Then there is leisure/touring/utility cycling, which (usually/mostly) has little sporting ambition, but may be connected with 'fitness' in a broad sense. A different, more diverse/nebulous self-image too.

There is of course a blurring of identities between the categories. It's not a binary opposition, more a spectrum of different interests/activities which all come under 'cycling' and sometimes contradict each other.

They have different goals and do different things, but they each have interest in the other's turf - for SC, more people on bikes for any purpose is likely to increase the chance of the latent sporting talent coming to the fore; whilst for CS, more prominent cycle sporting success is likely to raise cycling's profile with the general public, promoting general take up for fitness and utility and making the public more willing to see investment in cycling.

I don't know how closely they work together, but I could certainly understand SC not wanting to get too cosy with a quango.

So is Scottish Cycling what used to be the BCF and issued racing licences?

It used be simpler when there was the BCF for racing and the CTC for everything else.

"and the CTC for everything else"

Ah yes, but then along came Sustrans...

I think those two get along a bit better now.
