Did Haymarket again yesterday evening - I was surprised by the number of flyers still there from the morning.
Also had a nice chat with a woman on a Tern (I think) folding bike at Dalry Coop (by the way, if you happen to read this, you might consider putting your saddle up a little.)

"The Sciennes posters (which were there with the permission of the head teacher) have been taken down on the grounds that it's a political event - it's amazing how much trouble one person with a bee in their bonnet can make..."
Today there was a mobile 'poster'

Got up a bit late to get the full rush, but handed out fliers on the canal for 40 minutes.
Glad my chalk on SMW was noticed :D (did the PEDAL.... ON.... PARLIAMENT.... thing work? or did it look like Parliament on pedal? :). I've still got loads of fliers - will try to dispose of them all this evening on the Meadows during rush-hour (when's peak time do you think on Fridays?)
Even out on the canal I'd say 50% of people who stopped (80% of cyclists) knew what it was already :D But I feel for many of them the extra publicity convinced them to go when they were unsure before. I found it was useful to chat to reassure parents it's family-friendly + slow, etc.
Amazing work everyone!

Roibeard - I was unable to stream BBC Scotland via TuneIn this morning too. Probably better for my blood pressure that way, though!

NOW being discussed on Radio Scotland again.

Just seen that latest emailed update from Sally...
"we will be asking people to park their bikes in the cycle parking provided"
I assume this means there's some extra bike parking being laid on?
There is actual cycle parking sufficient for only about twenty bikes at the parliament, including the things which are probably barriers rather than racks at the ends of the footpaths. Perhaps space for sixty including trees, the huge poles supporting the canopy and the poles at the pedestrian crossing and bus-stop. Will the police let everyone else use the railings around the wee housey thing on the corner and those round the palace on the opposite side of the road to fit in a few hundred more?

"we will be asking people to park their bikes in the cycle parking provided"
Ultra-irony?
Posted 11 years ago # -
You'll have to ask Uberuce what the actual bike parking plans are but it's probably just going to be a space where bikes can be locked (frame to wheel) plus some marshals to keep an eye on the bikes and stop anyone taking away a bike that they can't unlock.
Sorry about this, it was an explicit requirement from the police who are concerned about overcrowding
Posted 11 years ago # -
So when we arrive we need to stow our bikes rather than keep them with us as last year? Hmmm.
Posted 11 years ago # -
Aye: what Sally said.
Posted 11 years ago # -
Uberuce is going to be busy! :O

If anyone lives near a bit of path or esplanade or prom or whatever to which people are known to flock in droves at the weekend (particularly during unpleasant burny weather conditions) then it might be useful to try to get out and chalk it this evening or early tomorrow morning for maximal dissemination.

Hmmm. Can't find any reference to this on the POP website info about the arrangements. Presumably it's only those in the inner circle who got this info.
Sorry, but no way I'm leaving the eBike unattended. Will join the parade, but then just head home if this is enforced.
Ironic that the authorities are being anti-bike... about a cycling protest?
Posted 11 years ago # -
It's on latest news item http://pedalonparliament.org/are-you-ready/ - right at the top - and it went out to everyone who signed up to receive information about POP, if that counts as an 'inner circle'. I'll add it to the on the day page as well to make it crystal clear. I'm sorry if people feel this wasn't properly signposted but as you can imagine we've got a million things to think about at the moment and we're doing our best

"Ironic that the authorities are being anti-bike... about a cycling protest?"
Think they are actually trying to be helpful - getting bodies rather than bikes near the action.
But it will certainly be counterproductive if there is anything other than 'you can leave your bikes over there, if you want to'.

Non-ideal but immovable objects are better than just locking your back wheel to the frame:

Dynamic EarthPillars:
Reid's CloseI'm not leaving mine in a pile (even one being observed by polices) as I've only recently replaced my rear mech.

Chdot But it will certainly be counterproductive if there is anything other than 'you can leave your bikes over there, if you want to'.
Doesn't sound like it:-
If people don’t park their bikes, then the police may start turning people away.
Posted 11 years ago # -
The marshals and cops on park detail are going to be looking out specifically for people trying to leave with bikes that they can't just push along because they have eg. the rear wheel locked to the triangle, or the whole bike locked to a friend's.
I personally intend to bring my ratty beater, but I'm also going to lock it to another marshal's bike, especially if it's a pretty one, simply because that will make it essentially unstealable.

Sorry, Sally. I really didn't mean to be critical of you or anyone else on here involved in organisation. Did just briefly wonder if it was being kept relatively quiet so as not to put folk off.
I'm not much of a one for listening to political speeches, so likely wouldn't have hung around anyways.
Agreed that in Europe, people seem to leave bikes around unlocked without a worry. But from what I've observed (merely as an occasional tourist) these bikes don't seem to get tampered with or nicked. My worry would be more about damage than actually getting nicked - and being left at the bottom of a heap of 3K+ bikes is unlikely to be healthy!
Anyway, if the weather's like this, it'll be a grand day out!
Apologies again, if I came across badly.Posted 11 years ago #
