Great choice of routes for a walking commute. I reckon the shortest possible route would go through Waverley Station and out the back entrance onto Calton Road. How cool getting to ride an escaltor on your way back from work.
He should take the side exit from Waverley then go up Jeffrey St, stopping in at Lickety Splits for 2oz of Soor Plooms and 2 oz of Hawick Balls, then whistle his way down to the parliament
