Breakfast Bikeride 2013

    Hello all,
I know there's POP2 to do first, but am trying to get things a bit organised for Breakfast Bikeride 2013.

First I'm trying to work out which rides we'll be doing. I'm hoping to have the routes sussed so we can make publicity in time to hand out at POP2 - would that be ok with the POP2 organisers? @SRD?

The rides last year are below. Trying to figure out which ones we should repeat? Or if anyone thinks we need others?

    Ones I know were ok:

Ward 9: Harrison Park: It was all round awesome.
Ward 10: Outside Dominion: Also awesome.
Ward 13 and 12: Leith and Leith Walk (foot of Leith Walk at 8am). Went well @wingpig - up for leading that ride again?.
Ward 15: East Parkside (near innocent tunnel). Sounded successful (@ARobComp - you up for it again?).
Ward 17: Portobello (meeting at Brighton Place and the High Street). successful! (seeing if Barney Dellar wants to take part).

Ones I don't really know about! (I wasn't great at collecting info afterwards :)

Ward 14: Meadowfield Park @ruggtomcat - how was this ride/up for doing it again?
Ward 16: Liberton High School: How was this ride? (check if Robert Gormley wants to lead the ride again)
Ward 4: met at five ways. Who went? How was it? (Asked Kate Joester to lead the ride again this year).
Ward 5: met Goldenacre/Warriston path junction. Will ask if Leisha Nolan will do it again. Does anyone know how this ride went?

    Thanks all!

    Mike.

Sounds good to me! I think our target should be to double the number of councillors who attended.

"target should be to double the number of councillors who attended"

    That's not incremental...

@SRD are there enough councillors to do that? (sorry didn't see your messages last week)

There's 50+ isn't there? How many did we have last year?

    Anything from ward 2?

@Dave, we could add it! I've not made the fliers yet.

I was going to strim down the number of rides as some last year were a bit quiet (4 people or fewer). But if people think that's a bad idea we can try to keep them all - but will need ride leaders for all of them! :)

The current strimmed down map: http://129.215.142.66/map.png
(based on which rides I know were successful last year :).

I'll add the Pentlands on if you want! Which route shall I put? And do you want to meet up with the Harrison Gardens gang before we head on? :D

I was hoping to get some printed to hand out at POP. Not sure I'll manage it in time (will see) :)

@SRD: You're right we 'only' had at least 10 councillors on the rides :) with 7-8 more at the breakfast. So we can double it once.

Have you thought about hiring / borrowing a couple of rickshaws to transport those councillors who can't cycle. They could then experience Edinburgh's fantastic cycle infrastructure at 10mph.

Count me in for organising the Porty ride again.

    @Hankchief/Blueth: That's a good idea! I'll investigate.

    @bdellar: Thanks :) That's fantastic!

Here's the fliers I've made for (hopefully) handing out at POP (if I get some printed in time!)

[edit: I've removed the front until I've got kaputnik's permission]
(hmm, kaputnik's name doesn't seem to be on them after my modifications, will just add it. I hope he's ok with me changing them... or whether he wants his name on these derived works? I've not had a reply from him - anyone know if he's away at the moment or something?)

@bdellar: Is the time ok for the portobello group (7:20am!)
@Dave: I've not added a ride from the Pentlands yet as I don't know where/when it would be from. But can add it over the next week or two to the website.

Also need to update the webpage - lots of it's still about 2012's bikeride.

@lionfish - looks like the website is down at the moment. I hoped to poke my current (and potential) councillors again this year, hence testing the link.

Thanks Roibeard. I'm afraid to say I've been completely slack on the BBR thing since POP. I really need to get in gear - get publicity printed, etc...

Anyway: The website's back up. I completely forgot I was hosting it on a computer that I removed a bunch of stuff from a few days ago (explains why google analytics said no one was visiting...).

Hopefully no permanent damage done to the BBR thing. I'll get onto the BBR stuff in the next day or two - also got my PhD viva in 12 days so bit distracted with that :/

Thanks for helping out again! I'll check through the list and make sure we've got someone for each ride, then I'll print out large quantities of fliers etc.

@kaputnik: Don't know if you saw my PM, but I've modified the images you made last year to use as leaflets, but I feel I should get your permission!! (maybe you don't want to be associated with the scruffy changes :) - let me know - or if you want to update it yourself?

Thanks everyone! I'll send out a message in a day or so with the plan :D

@bdellar - oops didn't see your reply! I guess there's time to still move the start-time, if you want? :D I just copied the stuff from last year for the rides I knew went ok.

I'll be at the b/fast (who'd turn down free bacon butties?!?!). I missed the 5 ways jct meetup last year as I bumped into and was delayed by a lovely wee young thing cycling through the Dalmeny Estate, tennis coach she was. Anyway I'll most likely just head stroight there. Hope its sunny and warm again!

  18. Going to see if I can get there early and take photos of everyone arriving :)

@DaveC - careful, I'd just taken a mouthful of coffee...

    <grin>

I recognise a kindred spirit, but I think it's better to acknowledge the distraction, and not act on it, than to hide it and run off with the secretary tennis coach!

So be happy with your wife and find your joy with the woman you married.

Not just anyone, though: "a lovely wee young thing" apparently!

@DaveC - just spotted the implicit character slur, thanks for not taking offense!

I was aiming for a compliment at the openness - I take the same approach to keep things above board!

@lionfish - and you expected what?

However in an effort to bring things a bit back on topic...

I'm in Liberton/Gilmerton and we've got a by-election on the 20th (the next day!), so I've invited the councillors and prospective councillors to join me cycling in.

Due to the lack of riders last year, though, this will be a discrete ride rather than one of the advertised rides.

So far, I've got one attendee - one of the candidates...

"@wingpig - up for leading that ride again?"

I couldn't even attend it never mind lead it last year. I can barely make it out of the house by 08:30 most days, so wouldn't risk putting my name down for anything starting at half seven. Fortunately, it appears I didn't, though your email had me worried for a moment in case I'd signed up for something months ago in a fit of optimism. Probably best taking my email address off breakfastbikeride.org.uk for now.

Only 3 days to go and as you may have noticed Lionfish hasn't managed to be on this as much as last year (but has passed his viva in the last week, so well done him!).

There are a few things we need some help with!
Publicity - if you can tell the internet it happening that would be really appreciated. (especially twitter)

We still don't have leaders for a couple of the rides so if you are planning to go on either.
    Forth
    Leith
    Duddingston (ruggtomcat?)
    Southside (ARobComp?)

If you are planning to go on any of these rides let me know if you would be willing to lead them (be nice to people and have a vague route planned!)

And finally email councilors to get them there. It doesn't have to be a ride it can just be the breakfast. I'm going to be emailing all of them in a minute but from people in their own ward is a lot more effective as I'm sure you all know!

    Thank you!

    Update!
Ok it's only Forth and Leith that we need ride leaders for now. If anyone's in those wards, let us know :D

    Thanks all,

    see you there!

PS Even if you can't make a ride, maybe send a quick one-line email to your councillors to check they're going to the breakfast! :D Thanks!
