Who's coming along to the Southside feeder - Innocent Railway at 8am. I do need a deputy leader just in case as there is a tiny chance I'll have to fly off to London at 6am on Wednesday.... Any volunteers? Anth?

For info: I wrote to the Almond ward Councillors. One response so far, from the SNP Councillor, sent at 1 am today (!)

"Thanks, I am aware of the Breakfast event as they are held regularly in the Quadrangle of the City Chambers and each time the event takes place I get emails from bike enthusiasts like yourself, SPOKES and even the council reminding me about them. I have also been invited to partake in the breakfast rides which I kindly turn down.

I am very supportive of making cycling safety a priority and note that CEC have committed to spending 6% of their transport budget on cycling. I am aware that more could be spent but it is worth noting that both the council leader, Andrew Burns and the Vice Convenor of the transport committee, Jim Orr are keen cyclists so the subject of cycling is never off the council agenda.

    Regards,
    Cllr Norman Work"

    I await other responses.

    Thanks Its_Me_Knees!

Unusual that they didn't give a reason for not being able to take part...

a polite response, but rather hostile/passive aggressive??

I would be tempted to tell him that we are not 'bike enthusiasts' but people who want safer roads and more liveable cities. or just 'constituents'.

He also implies that cycling is only on the agenda for Edinburgh because of Andtrew Burns and Jim Orr being keen cyclists - which completely misses the point. as we were reminded on Saturday night, many of the mayors who have made the most dramatic changes in their cities are not cyclists at all, much less 'cycling enthusiasts'.

I wrote him an email in reply:
    Hello,

I'm going to the breakfast bike-ride on Wednesday. I saw your reply to another of your constituents on the city cycle forum. I'm worried you might have misunderstood the purpose of the campaign.

First, most of us aren't "bike enthusiasts", but rather people who just want to get about town by bike - and we're not only campaigning for those who already cycle, but the majority of people who want to cycle more but feel they can't because the roads currently feel very hostile.

You note that two councillors are interested in cycling, and that this is sufficient, I feel this issue really should be considered and supported strongly by all councillors. Cycling offers a chance for people to incorporate exercise into their lives (on their commutes to work, etc) - a key step in your government's (SNP's) own "obesity roadmap" and the ATAP of the council. If sufficient numbers switch to walking and cycling, our city will have far less air pollution, congestion and noise. I'm also deeply concerned about climate change - moving our transport away from private-car use is a key step in tackling emissions. Finally, I really feel we need to make our streets safe enough for children to get about on their own, on their bikes to and from school, friends, etc, and give them back the independence they've lost over recent years.

Although you said you wouldn't be able to make the bike rides, I do hope you can make the breakfast itself.

I look forward to your reply,

    ...etc

In fairness he was responding to my email where I said that I considered myself not to be a particularly active pro-bike lobbyist/activist but rather an enthusiast and commuter who - like thousands of other such average Joes - just wanted to see a lasting financial commitment to cycling in Edinburgh to help it reach its undoubted potential to be a city with world-class sustainable transport.

I interpreted any suggestion of hostility (tetchiness?) as a reflection of the time of day...

I want to try and get a grip on which councillors have said they will be there. (and which haven't)
    So far:
Shandon - Andrew and Gavin, (David keys can't)
Southside - Steve Burgess, Jim Orr
Portobello - Maureen Childs (seeing cycle off and going to breakfast)
    Liberton/Gilmerton - Bill Cook

At the Breakfast - Lesley Hinds
    (Norman Work?)

    Not going
Karen Doran (city centre), Ricky Henderson (pentland), Joanna Mowat (City Centre), Jason Rust (Fairmilehead)

    Sure I've missed some.
Anyone able to add to the list?

    Dead Breakfast Bike Team,

Thanks for your email. I will give the cycle ride a miss this year but will try to attend the breakfast at the City Chambers and speak to the cyclists.

    Regards
    Cllr Norman Work

Interesting - so is he coming or not?! Also sent at 1am! Not sure if I should draw any conclusions from the typo?!..............

Maybe I flew-off the handle a bit, he sent a very nice email in reply,

    Hi Mike,

I'm sorry if my response was misunderstood. I did not realise that calling someone a bike enthusiast was in any way contentious. I certainly did not mean it to be.

As referring to the statement about two councillors who are cyclists I was just trying to emphasise that there are Councillors who are cyclists and that two of them are important Councillors, one being the leader and one with a transport remit.

Having said that, point taken, one doesn't need to be a cyclist to support cycling issues and I would like to clarify (again) that I support making cycling safer and support the campaigns which encourage this and I apologies if the comments I made did not seem to be in favour or gave the impression that I did not understand the issues surrounding the Breakfast Bike Ride.

Anyway, wonder if we can ask councillors who say they support it but didn';t ride in why? and how we could help? would a bike hire place be willing to lend them a bike for the day? could someone help deliver them? ride home with them at the end of the day?

Obviously, we don't want to pressure them - enough folk already thing we want to force everyone to cycle. But, if there are simple reasons why they don't, it would be nice to be seen to support them.

Just had Edinburgh Evening News ring up for a quote. Then ring back to ask how many people went on all the rides last year (and how many went to the breakfast). I guessed at 'over 100' for the rides and 300-400 for the breakfast itself - complete guesses. Anyone else want to have a shot?

(and I'm not going to be reading the comments on that article!)

First, most of us aren't "bike enthusiasts", but rather people who just want to get about town by bike…

I was talking to Laid Back this evening about that. MCA's analogy with toasters on Saturday evening was accurate; for many people a bike is just a tool, and often the right tool for the job, and the right tool usually covers all the bases.

To move to 'enthusiast' one would have to buy What Toaster? and Toasting Weekly magazine, ogle the high-end titanium and carbon fibre toasters that have 28 heat settings, a daily capacity of over 3000 slices and hyper-ergonomic side handles with a proximity-detect digital control interface, and perhaps the enthusiast would also have built up a couple from second-hand toaster chassis in various retro shades of burnished aluminium and tooled leather and wood. Me? I just want to heat a bit of bread.

Lionfish, I distributed all 40-odd flyers today.

Arellcat, That toaster sounds fab!! Have you got a link?! I'm confussed as I was so sure John Lewis would sell them but there is nothing like that on their website!!

You can tell that councilor, I'm a bike enthusiast!! :0)

"Lionfish, I distributed all 40-odd flyers today." -- wooohooo :D Thank-you so much! I've noticed I've had incredibly high-returns from fliering :D (maybe 1/4 people go, but they each bring 3 friends :D).

ok, an exaggeration, but it does seem a very good way of spreading the word - also I've realised POP's reached 'brand-saturation' (or whatever technical term marketing people use) - I often try to introduce the BBR/SBB as 'POP but for the council' and 80%+ people know what Pedal on Parliament is :D

Thanks again Arelicat for helping!! :)

Hmm might try and make the 07:45 Fiveway Junction.

Shame there is nowhere further Northwest.

    @DaveC: sorry :) Didn't want a ride with just 2 people on - also needed a ride-leader for each ride :D

On that topic - the 5-ways (Forth) junction ride still needs a leader! Would you be up for that! (means I don't have to cycle out to it! :) - send me a pm if you want.

Also - if you've got a mo - could you send an email to your councillors asking them to take part on that ride? :D (I'm not sure if anyone from that ward's contacted them).

    Thanks everyone!

    See you there! :D

I probably won't get there until 9:30 as I'll be dropping the kids off at school.

Likely to be any breaky left then?
