    @Lionfish,

Yeh I'll lead the ride. You know I live in Fife right so don't have any elected reps in Edinburgh.

I will ride from 5 ways - Scotland St - St Andrews Sq - South St Andrews Sq - South St Davids St - Princes Street *** TRAM TRACKS!!*** Waverly Br - Market Street - Behind the Court to City Chambers.

I hope they're fit ;O) Its a race right? First ones there nabs all the Bridies!! There are bridies right? cos if there ain't I cannie make it pal!!

Seriously, Is this route ok? I'd prefer not taking riders up North Bridge and turning across traffic onto the High Street!!

I see 4 councilors on the list. Are they all coming? If not let me know who and I'll pop round their houses on the way to wake them bright and early!! ;o)

I can keep banging on about how I got into cycling and Audaxing through my local councillor in Fife!! ;O)

cool - copied to breakfastbikeride.org.uk - until today it said that ride was 'not confirmed' so we might not get many people on it - but we'll see :)

I've had a lot of questions about what the breakfast consists of - you'll have to ask SPOKES or find out on the day :)

Fantastic! Thanks! Looks good - a bit steep in places, but that's Edinburgh for you :)

I've completely lost track of which councillors are doing what - let me know :)

Thanks again!!! See you at the breakfast: )

Another reply to my email to Almond councillors, rec'd today:

"Thank you for these points you raise. I fully support all efforts made at local and national level to give cycling the full commitment needed. I am not merely just saying this on the back of your comment about opting not to vote for a councillor that failed to give cycling a full endorsement, but because I share exactly the same views as you in relation to the environmental impact it has on Edinburgh as a city, as well as the good it can do for youngsters who may take such a hobby to a new level, for commuters finding new healthier ways to get to work, and elderly people which we see much more of these days opting to cycle to get out and about. All these factors are positives and I don't know of any councillor that isn't in support of this. Not everyone that supports cycling does cycle - I don't for instance, but I cannot fault those that do.

It is incumbent upon ourselves as councillors to ensure that if any 'A' grade or gold standard is set, we must aid cycling in every way we can. That is more than having a child learn to ride and then tell them to make off as they please. We have to ensure our roads are safe, the routes do not conflict with other vehicles, and that there is the space for such opportunities across the city. It is not just about the cyclists being encouraged but those that don't cycle giving respect to those that do and appreciate their place on the road. I an confident that these efforts have been achieved well in the past and continue to do so.

I unfortunately won't be able to attend the event tomorrow due to another engagement but I am fully supportive of everything groups such as Spokes do and that the advancement of such an environmentally-friendly and exercise fulfilling hobby as cycling is well-maintained.

Thanks again for raising this, very much appreciated.

    Best,
    Alastair

    Alastair Shields,
    Almond ward councillor"

Generally pretty positive response although those of a cynical bent might see little more than platitudes. The bit about making sure 'the routes do not conflict with other vehicles' is interesting...I wonder if 'other vehicles' includes trams..?

    Breaking News: Leith Walk Ride!
We've had a positive response from Councillor Whyte, joining the Leith Ride! (which I'll be leading I think :) Hope lots join us on that route! :P

    See you there!

Dissapointing turnout - only SIX lorries and white vans lined up on the double yellows on the high street.

Fabulous cyclist turnout though - had to be at least 100 people there already about 8:05 when I got there, struggled to find a free space to leave the bike in (fortunately I spotted a CCE bike and parked up against that)

The High St was ridiculous when I left at 08:50ish. Vans, taxis, mini-coaches all over the place stopping where ever they felt like it.

    Is it always like that?

Nice bacon roll and coffee at the breakfast.

    A Meh Zin!!!

Wonderfull turn out, I spotted and or spoke to, Lionfish (sorry will say hello next time), Instography, SRD, Rugg Tomcat, Arellcat, Willmington's Coo, Kappers, Laidback, Kim, DdF, Dave, Riobard, Min, aRobComp, and a few more whose names escape me....

I met up with 5!! cyclists at Fiveways and we rode along merrily bumping into Min on the way, and a Frence collegue too - who sadly didn't join us...

Had my fill of Bacon sarnie and orange, and spotted some vonderbar bikes!! chdot has to be one of the most memorable, along with a Lurvely shiney Blue and Red Flying Scotsman and a weenie Obrien (650cc wheelled racer). Also spotted an orange Bob Jackson and loads of MTBs and Ridgeback commuter types.

Spotted a big chunk of CCE, and had a nice chat with a couple of non-CCE friends as well. I left the enormous queue for bacon sandwichs to its own devices for a while, but left it too late and they'd run out by the time I was there.

DaveC, I think you mean Tugg Romcat, who had a special badge and everything. :>

Nice leisurely morning for me since I am off work! Dodged a motorbarney with a van driver parked on the high street and entirely blocking the road (except to bikes) on the way to the meadows for some wobbly MSP fun and more coffee.

    Not making yourself popular y'know...

Thanks everyone :D Leith's ride had 10 people on (including 2 councillors). After the ride had a nice coffee & chat with chdot, LB et al. at PY (that should be made official after BBR2014 for all those who can delay work :).

If I got a pound for every time I was asked that...

*sigh* well, at least I have my porn name now....

cb: The High St was ridiculous when I left at 08:50ish. Vans, taxis, mini-coaches all over the place stopping where ever they felt like it.

pretty much, the dead end provided by the bollards becomes a parking space for drop offs to businesses on the ped area, and coaches come down all the time to drop people off, or because they think they can drive down the high street then discover they have to reverse into the courts and (not) avoid the bollards (which incidentally are a terrible hazard, someone falls over them most days). The one on the corner opp the war memorial is loose and the one directly outside is missing all together.

This morning the vans got around the parking restrictions (they were re-painting the yellows) by parking on the pavement itself, technically wide enough but Tarquin was not pleased when he came to set up his stall.

    Ahh, street life!

Oh and I recon they should pedestrianize the whole mile, its a no brainer. The impact on local buisnesses alone will be amazing! (why do you think there are no cars inside shopping malls?)

I agree whole completely ruggtomcat, they should only allow deliveries out of hours.
