I thought you could but scotrail defaults to a mobile site on the iPad ... Very annoying.
You can book any route through east coasts site and they definitely d cycle reservations.

Yep, it's still there on the Scotrail site. If you choose your ticket price, then click 'book now' underneath the wee box within which you choose your seating preferences (forwward, backward, airline etc.) there's a 'bicycle space' with a little plus to open the box.
I used it for my jaunt on Monday - was sceptical about it working, but the machine printed out my bike tickets as promised.

Right so if I buy the cheapest ticket and have to take a specific train I can reserve a bicycle space both ways. If I buy the std single each way I can't book a bike space, presumable as if the train I take if full I have the option of getting a later train which may have space. The problem is trains with no changes are later in the day/evening.... I'll wait until I know what my cycling mate is doing before making a decision.

If you've got an open ticket you can reserve on one train and you should get on that one with your bike if you get another valid train you're at the mercy of no one else using the inadequate bike spaces.

@DaveC, I have this quandary for a couple of upcoming journeys to audax events. I've bought open tickets, and will just go to the station ahead of time to get the (free) bike reservation: traditional but it works!
