    Hi,

This is a query regarding this access to the canal to/from Wester Hailes road. See also streetview.

From the canal, there is a ramp providing level access over the canal on the bridge carrying Wester Hailes Rd, as shown hopefully by the streetview link.

I want to proceed south then turn right onto Westburn Avenue.

The crossing isn't a toucan, so I know it would be an offence to use it. Equally, it seems like it might be a bit courageous to launch off the pavement into the middle of the box junction while one or other of the major traffic streams has a green light.

I could proceed along the pavement and turn right into Westburn Avenue, then cross over there, but there are no signs denoting it as shared use.

It's obviously completely legitimate to use the ramp to leave the canal, but what does the forum advise then?

I'll be putting this to the test this evening when I take the trailer down to Krispy Kreme... there's no chance of using the access off Westburn Middlefield due to the anti-disability gate on the bridge.

Take the path that connects from the bridge to the end of Morvenside and then get up to Westburn Avenue from there.

(Also, how many doughnuts do you need to buy before it justifies a trailer!)

I have no advice to offer just the mind boggling amount of doughnuts that it would take to load your trailer. How many do you get to 50kg...

More importantly: are you bringing some over to us? (will trade for a jar of mango chutney)

I go up on the pavement, very rarely any pedestrians, might be a little tricky with trailer.

If coming from currie end I access canal from hermiston and go along to Cultins road then down to gap between decathlon and Tesco but i am not going to Krispy Kreme. If I was I might stay on Cultins to bottom and turn left then follow main road round to the main entrance to the retail park.

If coming from juni green there is the bridge at westburn village but that would not be trailer friendly

Thanks all - I didn't actually go to Krispy Kreme, but the Tesco there is now our local supermarket and I'd prefer not to have to drive if possible. It was really very nice heading down Donkey Lane and around onto the canal in the sunshine - probably passed by only two or three cars from door to door.

In the end I just went round this junction on the pavement, but having seen it in the flesh this is definitely illegal (no drop kerb until after the solid white line). It was wide enough to do easily with pedestrians despite the trailer however.

Next time I'll investigate AKen's tip about Morvenside, that seems like it could be a winner.

I wonder if it would be possible to request the anti-disability barrier is removed though. IIRC from the one time I dared to try, I wasn't actually able to use it with my bike (no trailer) except by lifting the bike clear above my head, which seems excessive.
