    Indeed - at least BusTracker works - and presumably no-one has to work out if it's cost effective (bit like the tram...)

    There was also a (presumably expensive) site with maps of Edinburgh with all sorts of possible overlays (this was before Google got busy).

    Unfortunately it only worked properly on PCs so I (and most schools) never got to use it much.

    Went off-line after maybe a year.

    I found openstreetmap.org through a cycling page somewhere, handy as you can add your own local info to it like dentists, doctors, chemists, pubs, shops, parks, paths, take aways etc etc etc

    Indeed -

    It's the mapping base for http://edinburgh.cyclestreets.net

    SO it's really good if people correct duff info (there is some) and add missing bits PLUS useful stuff - like tea shops.

    I recently added a simple flight of steps down to the canal past Ratho which means the green (quietest) route doesn't leave the towpath before it has to.

    Looks like I'll have to investigate that kink on the towpath (on the map)!

    ah yes, cyclestreets that was it - I noticed there were pubs marked on that and not my locals so I thought I would try to add them in, then got carried away and spent a good two hours detailing everything within a 10 minute walk of my home

    That's the spirit!

    The 'user interface' takes a bit of getting used to but it's worth the effort.

    For iPhone users there is Mapzen.

    UK gov discloses cost of iphone apps

    By the end of May there were over 53,000 downloads of the Jobcentre Plus app, although critics have asked why someone who can afford both an iPhone and the expensive running costs would need a Jobcentre Plus app.

    There are also reports that it will not work with Apple's new iOS4, which Mark Wallace, campaign director for the Tax Payers' Alliance, found a little ironic.

    "Someone who is faced with losing their home because of high tax bills, or whose life is being ruined by crime isn't going to get any reassurance from knowing there's an app for that,"

    Yeah Apple's recent software update messed up various apps.

    But this one looks like it could be quite useful (you don't have to be unemployed to be looking for another job).

    Increasing use of the web (on or off mobile 'phones) means more business for companies that do it well and can lead to better services and/or more efficient use of staff, so the jobcentreplus app is probably worth the money.

    Remember the Cones Hotline?

    I can image cones hotline operators spending a lot of time browsing on their iphones, looking for other jobs...
