" The Council is planning to invest in cycle routes in the West area including improvements to the route adjacent to the A8 between South Gyle and Newbridge. These considerations include resurfacing and widening sections of footway, crossing improvements, new signage and improvements at side road junctions."

So far this has resulted in some white paint on the path at the entrance to Castle Gogar - more specifically as you approach on the path you get a "slow" , a bike symbol and dashed lines across the path.

If you approach (by car) from over the tram level crossing and through the narrow gateway (where you can't see bikes approaching) you get..... nothing. No sign no paint - nothing.

This may still be WIP, but it looks clear who's interests are taking priority. I think as it stands it may even make the junction worse as the locals can now head through the gap with impunity as it is clear that bikes have to give way to them.

It wouldn't have been difficult to put dashed lines across the junction to act as a reminder to drivers that bikes could be crossing. They are going to have to stop at the edge of the A8 about 3m further on anyway.

Castle Gogar is so infrequently used (private residence) that there's absolutely no reason why it should have the priority there.

Chdot posted a link to this recently which reminded me that I haven't given an update, in case anyone is interested...

The update is that nothing has changed...

This the response I got from the council

I can confirm that the give-way markings installed at the Gogar Castle access were not implemented as part of the A8 cycle route improvements mentioned previously. Rather, they were installed in response to a complaint made by someone accessing Gogar Castle. They highlighted that it was not clear who should give-way at this crossing and the markings were installed to clarify the situation according to our understanding of the legal position. As the cycleway is a ‘footway’ converted to shared use (pedestrian/cyclist) and drops in height to meet the access road we consider that legally pedestrians and cyclists should give-way to vehicles accessing/egressing this road.

If the priority was changed to favour pedestrians/cyclists, vehicles accessing the Gogar Castle access road would need to stop in the inside A8 traffic lane if giving way to them. As the A8 is a busy, 40mph, road this would present a significant and unacceptable safety risk.

I don't totally agree with the last point as the good people of Gogar Castle have tended to stop on the main road and wave us across anyway.

One advantage of the trams is that the traffic to/from Gogar Castle is slower now they have to stop and look for trams.

On the legal point - it seems like we're destined to be giving way all the time with this in place. Still not as bad as this

Saw a near miss here this morning.

A city bound cyclist's path coincided with an exiting car. From my vantage it looked closed. The car stopped suddenly and the bike continued. I muttered 'that was close' as he passed me.

As it stands the cyclist was in the wrong as he went over the give way marking but as noted above not a helpful layout.

Technically, you're right, of course. However, I have sympathy with the cyclist here. I pass this spot daily and I can only think of a very few occasions when a car has either been exiting or entering as I've passed.

I'm wary, but my expectation is generally that I can pass across without too much slowing down.

One of these days I'll be the guy you saw today.

Totally agree with you. It's a poor set up, made worse by the give-way paint and the high fence put up around the lodge house garden blocking what limited visibility previously existed.

It just adds to the hassle of using the cycle path. It's no wonder that about half of cyclists stick to the road instead.

My turn to have a close shave here this week...

When at the 'give-way' markings nothing was visible exiting Castle Gogar (which is hardly surprising giving the poor sight-lines), but once I was on the road I could see some very sharp braking being performed by an exiting white Mini.

I was most of the way across before she came to a stop, which thankfully was before she reached my path.

What surprised me was the speed she was coming at - given she was about to stop at the A8 anyway - she must have already been planning for some heavy braking.
