“When we were asked to provide a temporary demountable and reusable roof structure to cover an entire open air tennis court in Edinburgh, one of the UK’s famously windy cities, we knew we had to come up with an innovative engineering concept.

Except the supports would have to be outside the velodrome on the north, and thus too close to the railway line.

The one that gets used once a week.

    Sad but true.

"The one that gets used once a week."

You sure it's only once a week?

Will close 'soon' when Powderhall refuse depot shuts.

Certainly used to be the case - Saturday mornings - but I bow to greater wisdom.

But from memory the line has to be closed and lifted before the building restriction can be considered removed.

How this fitted with the temporary stands for the Commonwealth Games I do not know, but this was the problem when the idea was thought of some 10 years ago.

    Didn't know that.

    Thought main issue was cost.

Now main issue might become 'no users' - most going to Glasgow.

I know ERC is trying to get Friday sessions up and running at Meadowbank for kids.. At least 10 signed up I think. So there is some demand.

Well it turns out it didn't work. Whoddathunkit that rain in Scotland comes in sidieways, and not straight down like it does in all those jungle scenes in Vietnam movies.

Were the same designers also responsible for the new tram shelters?

“Following on from last year’s event we revised the design of the roof covering the court to provide better weather protection. This resulted in a unique and complex design, which required specialists to manage and oversee the build. Due to unforeseen circumstances the specialist team have been unable to facilitate the build and despite extensively investigating all alternative options we have not been able to secure a solution.
